Specs

CPU: i7 6700HQ
RAM: 16GB DDR4 @ 2133Mhz
Storage: Muskin Pilot-E 500GB NVMe SSD (this I bought in October 2019, it's not as old as the laptop)
GPU: GTX 980M with 8GB VRAM
Screen: 17.3" 1080p @ 60Hz - the screen is still really beautiful, even after all this time.

I've cleaned it up inside and repasted with thermal grizzly.

Issues

There are a number of issues, which is why I recommend using it as a work / dev rather than gaming and carting around.

* Structural integrity: This is a frustrating one. Bad design means that the screw mounts have degraded and broken in a lot of places. I have fixed most of them with QBond. This has helped for the most part. Occassionally I've had to open it up and fix some more. I have had bad luck with this from the beginning - it is not from abuse. The laptop went back to Rectron in here twice under warranty to fix this issue. I paid for a new casing out of pocket after that. Unfortunately now the laptop is EOL so the parts are not readily available. Might be able to find a new casing on ebay, but it's a lot of effort to transplant the parts. QBond is cheaper and quicker. I have also lost some screws through the years - you should be able to see in the pics.

* GPU: This is the most frustrating one - if I put everything on high in Dota2, Dota2 will sometimes freeze. I have tried a reinstall, which seems to help. I have also tried installing Windows 11. I am not sure if Windows 11 helped because I haven't tested it lately. I can only assume that the GPU is on its way out, but I have yet to see any conclusive evidence. In the spirit of transparency, I can't recommend this for gaming.

Dumb Issues

* The laptop can't sense when the lid is closed, so it won't go to sleep / turn off when you close the lid. Rectron lost a part.

* Bluetooth doesn't work after waking up from sleep. You have to restart. Wireless is fine though. It's been like this since I can remember, I am unsure if this is age or a hardware issue. After a restart it's 100% though.

* In my efforts of trying to ease the strain on the screw mounts, I have loosened up the hinges (they were really tight - unbelievably tight). The screen stays up itself, but it's best to be careful and not open it too wide.

* The laptop refused to let me use safe boot / UEFI with any other drive other than the original. Unfortunately the original is long gone. You HAVE to use legacy boot, which is an annoying pain. I am pretty sure this is a bios issue of sorts.

* I don't know if it's a victim of the many times it's been fixed, but the touchpad is horrible. For some reason the touchpad buttons don't work - it's been a few days since I installed Win11 and used it so I need to see if it's a driver issue. Will update.
