AMD has great drivers on Linux these days. What doesn't it do that you need it to?
What distro are you using, and what version of kernel/Mesa? You may just need to update the kernel and Mesa to a later version and you'll be good on radeonsi. My R9 290 runs pretty good on even the older kernel in elementary OS.

Running ubuntu 16.04 ( kernel 4.13.0-36) , also tried it on ubuntu 14.04 lts with the old catalyst drivers, also tried mint 18.3,
Pop! OS and Bodhi 4.5. Had terrible performance on all, so I borrowed a 550ti from a friend and it ran flawlessly. So I'm just gonna make the switch to nvidia for now while I still have some hair left

Ah, I'm surprised. That kernel version should have had decent Mesa support for that generation of card, so I wouldn't know what else to try. Unfortunately I'm not in the market for a lower power card now and I'm in Durbs, so good luck with the sale.
