Gaming chairs, their prices, lack of info... and what's the deal with RogueWare?

I am currently looking at buying a replacement chair and figured I'd look into gaming chairs for once (never could understand what makes a chair a "gaming" device so I never really looked into it before). It seems that every store and their dog is selling RogueWare chairs and yet it seems the only info you can find about these chairs is what is copy pasted between the different sites. Heck, maybe my Google skills are severely lacking but it seems like Rogueware doesn't even have a website!?

How is it that every store and their dog sells a product for thousands of Rands and the company making them doesn't even have a website? :O Is it possible that a company can exist which supplies so many stores yet DOESN'T have it's own website or am I just really, really bad at using Google?

Since a single chair can cost up to 2 months gross salary I would like to know what makes them worth it compared to a R200 chair from the local pawn shop but some of the chairs I have seen say "This chair has a cross stitch pattern which makes it awesome" and I am just left scratching my head or picking my mouth up from the floor... I have to pay R6000 extra just so the chair has a diamond pattern? Really!? WTF?

So I look at different brands and I read a couple of interesting things about a couple of different ones and finally I know more or less what to ask for when I am looking for a chair... but the info I get from one site is completely lacking on another for another brand. For instance: Brand 1: We use memory foam / Brand 2: We use a steel frame / Brand 3: We use a steel frame and metal allow solid base / Brand 4: We use metal, pvc and wood (not telling you where, just know that some parts are one of these pieces) / Brand 5: We use cross stitching to improve your gaming excellence ...

Prices range from expensive to ludicrous and yet the info on the chairs are so limited, made up for with 4 pages worth of pictures showing how the arm piece can be rotated... but RogueWare is the one brand you can rest assured you will find everywhere but nowhere will you find any info that you haven't already read word for word on another site. So what's their deal?

I was looking at the XL-1315 cause it was the cheapest one I could find (i.e. expensive) but only by reading the user review of another model did I learn that the OTHER model has a metal base and the 1315.. "well, buy it and see"... or go to the website and learn more about it there... one day... when care enough about their products to build a website for it... Whaaaaaat? They couldn't even bother to create a website for their products and yet every site and their dog is asking a fortune for these same products?

What gives, man? :O

The only thing I can think of that makes any kind of sense is that they only sell to shops and thus they reckon: "People don't need to know anything other than the 3 lines of info and the accompanying 80 pics we gave the suppliers" and based on that info we should pay whatever price for whatever model and just wait and see what we get when it gets here... But surely I must be wrong... :O

So I ask again: What gives!? Do I just suck at using Google or what?

From what I've gathered about them, here is what I would like to know when I look at a chair:
Does it support my weight? (Few do but some don't even care to list that info)
Does it have a metal or plastic base? (Again, some mention it and others leave you hanging with at least ONE surprised buyer discovering: Wow! This one has a metal base! Awesome!)
Does it recline? (The ones at Game either make me fall over backwards or literally catapult me out of the chair)
What makes this one worth R3000 or R8000 when both offer the same answers to the previous 3 questions?

Why is it so had to find these answers? Especially the last one!
WootWare had a RogueWare on sale last week for under R3000 and it supported 200Kg, had a metal base and reclined (not as much as others but I think a 180 degree recline is a bit overkill anyway so this is fine)... but other chairs cost way more than double the price and offer the same answers as above. The very fact that RogueWarehas no website made em think that it is a piece of c*** brand and not worth spending R10 on so I let that sale pass me by. Now it seems the cheapest chair I can find that meets my requirements costs R4000... So what's the deal? Why could I get a RogueWare for R2400 tht matches what I can get now for R4000 which matches another brand for R8000+ ... with such limited info available on the chairs, how can one possibly make an informeddecision on how many months worth of salary to sink into a chair?

Honestly, I am thinking it would be far cheaper to buy a living room set and having myself a couch or a lay-z-boy for a gaming chair... can't see why that is not a viable option since the info on the chairs is being treated as top secret info that may only be revealed after sale...

tl;dr to be honest. Gaming chairs are just good looking office chairs with a huge price tag. If you want quality spend it on a good office chair, if you want a bucket seat that's branded for gamers, get a gaming chair. Not saying they all bad, but 70% is going into appearance.

Man, I wish I could also write quality posts / replies that fit into a tweet! :)

Office chairs trump gaming chairs, huh? I can get behind that. I was just reading an article linked to by @SILTECH786 listing the top 15 chairs and gaming chairs didn't feature anywhere on that list :)

So I guess I need to find a place that sells loads of office chairs... Any recommendations other than Takealot?

Makro?

[insert scared face here] I read on here less than an hour ago that Makro sells something like custom clone brands that are just not that good and should be avoided.
I tried Game but their stock is so insanely limited and their staff so totally clueless that Makro was actually my next option.

I live in the middle of NowhereVille in the province of ForgetMeNot so my choices are limited to:
1. Game (Sampled c***),
2. Makro (added expense but I get to sample it. Hopefully not c***, but possible, adding the possibility of travelling and coming back empty handed
3. Mail order (buying completely blind)

Makro was on my list till I read: "Best to avoid" and "Stay away"... I am absolutely relying 100% on the experience of others here!

Depends which makro and who you deal with ;)

Montana branch is the closest one to me... unless Pta North has one also... I forget the name of the mall now... Wonderboom?

The problem I have with places like them that have chairs just as an after thought is that I have no idea what I'm looking for, just that I want something decent that won't break the bank. Will theseguys have a clue when I ask them something?

This is what attracted me to gaming chairs in the first [read: only] place... I figured places like WootWare would be able to make sure I don't waste my money. When I went to game they didn't even know that some chairs had weight restrictions! :O We eventually found one with a 120Kg limit but I need one with at least 150Kg. Would places like Makro know anything about weight limits, lumbar support, steel frame or not or anything like that... or would they just go: "Errr, this one sells the best. Get this one".

I never thought much about buying a chair but when I saw the prices I started asking "Why?" and now buyinga chair is something that is taking quite a bit of effort on my end and I really don't want to go speak to a guy who just doesn't know and just doesn't care :/

Surprisingly enough... I was just joking with my wife the other day when we were in a new (massive!) Chinese store in town.. We walked past the car spares section and I said to her "Hey, that car seat looks really comfy! Maybe I should just buy a car seat and find some way to attach a base to it. Ha ha ha!" and less than 30 minutes ago I read @SEXCZN did exactly that and actually recommends doing so! :O If only I had the skills with my hands to do anything other than typing I would have loved to do that! :D I know how much time I spend in my car seat and I know how comfy that is! :D

Hey bud. It's pretty easy to actually do. You just need a piece of metal or wood the size of the car seat base. It takes about 8 bolts in total to mount. 4 to mount the wood or piece of metal to the office chair base and 4 to mount the car seat to the wood or metal base. Comfort will always depend on the seat you choose. I was originally going to get a BMW seat but figured a good condition one would cost a fortune so I went to the local car accessories store and they allowed me to sit on them and decide which one was comfortable to me and I bought that. The car seat isn't like those gaming chairs they make because the gaming chairs are just office chairs with gamer vinyl or leather upholstery. The car seat was designed for long hauls in comfort so they are firm. I've gamed for hours with no discomfort. That's not to say office chairs are bad there are probably some really good ones available but they are pretty steep. It all comes down to the individual. I'm pretty hands on so the seat was a piece of cake to make. Maybe I should have done a DIY when I was building it. I personally used wood on mine for the base. 🙂

Oh man, I would soooo be the first person to like your youTube video if you make one of of them now! :D

My dad was the hands on type. Me not so much. I would likely go to the junk yard and buy a piece of metal from there but then I'd most likely weld it on ... and with my skills doing anything other than typing (seriously, you should see me trying to game with WASD... I would easily get a million likes per month as people laugh at me 😜) my upgrade from wood to metal will probably be the REASON why my chair breaks... I'll probably buy some sort of metal that is too heavy for the base or just makes the entire chair off balance and lay facing the ceiling every time I sit down... :/ Sigh, such is life :(

I looked at your mate's chair that he has up for sale (the one you said you made for him) but he gives no indication of the weight that chair can handle (nor will I know that if I build my own) plus he says collection only, else I would have been all over that the same day. Pun intended ;) Nevertheless, I can at least go see how much it will cost me and if push comes to shove I can ask the welder up the road how many thousands of Rands he will charge me for the job... Simple job, expensive guy... Hmmm... WootWare after all? Will see...

EDIT: Did a quick search for second hand seats near by and found 2 for R800! Wow! What a price difference! Considering we already have 2 broken office chairs and some pieces of decent quality wood in the shed this would mean R800 + 16 bolts and fuel for a 90 minute trip for 2 chairs! Wow! Truly not a bad idea to try and get this done! First stop, though, local spares place! Since I only need the seat I can afford to buy new so I can also give them a test before I buy! Hmmmm.... I came here wondering what the deal was with RogeWare and their non existent website and now I am considering a DIY project making my own chair! :D Wonder If I should make a video! :D lol.... Me! Should be a good for a laugh as a precursor to the me falling off my chair video! 😜🤣😁

In my opinion if you are buying untested or considering whatever a mass store like Makro sells then target gamer chairs. Yes they're overpriced but they adhere to a certain standard. And the thing about Rogueware is that quite a few models supposedly support up to 200Kg so that makes them sturdy if nothing else, sturdier than your average gaming chair.

However you would do much better to find a place that makes office furniture in your neighborhood and then plonk your buttocks on everything they make.
