Samsung Electronics Co(005930.KS) premiered its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, which sports a bigger display and unconventional features such as gesture controls, as the South Korean giant challenges Apple Inc(AAPL.O) on its home turf.
The phone, the first in Samsung's highly successful Galaxy S-series to make its global debut on US soil, was unveiled to a packed audience at Manhattan's iconic Radio City Music Hall on Thursday evening.
The S4, which Samsung preceded with a marketing blitz that drummed up industry speculation reminiscent of some of Apple's past launches, will be available by the end of April. Samsung said all major U.S. service providers will sell the phone, but kept mum on exact dates and prices.
The latest Galaxy bristles with a host of features not typically found on rivals' phones: it can stop and start videos depending on whether someone is looking at the screen, flip between songs and photos at the wave of a hand, and record sound to run alongside snapped still pictures.
The success or failure of Samsung's latest flagship phone - the fourth in a brand launched in 2010 - will be pivotal in the world's biggest smartphone maker's battle against Apple and smaller. Key to that struggle will be phone differentiation.

5 inch screen?
Was hoping it wouldn't be a wandering TV. Otherwise, looks good.

Same boat here my trusty S2 still holding the fort but need to upgrade this itch in my pocket is burning a flipping massive hole grrr . Just not big enough to get a s4 lol

I'm not impressed. It's like a S3 with a processor and screen upgrade. meh.

Would rather go for this if I decide to upgrade from my S2: HTC One

Looks like an iPhone... Are you trying to tell us something dude? *limp wrist*

lol I despise iPhone ans I love samsung... All my stuff is samsung, but this upgrade is retarded.

To be honest, it is an iPhone upgrade... Ohhh looky a new phone that is almost exactly the same as the previous one. meh.

The HTC is something different, even if it has the same specs... and no it doesn't look like an iPhone >.<

HTC has a 4MP camera... Welcome to 1999.

Go read the comparison again gustav. Check closely.

Very true indeed. I didn't look closely enough at the specs. That is my bad :).

My point is I would rather go to HTC (Although I love Samsung), than to get a senseless "Apple type" of upgrade.

Think I will replace my S2's housing to white, and wait for something else (4MP won't cut it) :p

Errr... Did you even see the launch video??

Infrared - you can use it as a motherflipping remote
13 MP camera
Simultaneous recording from both cameras
Triple camera video calling - you see them, they see you, you both see the 13 MP camera
Air gestures
Touch screen works while wearing gloves

Anyone who knows anything about camera's will tell you the retarded marketing game phone companies are playing with the whole megapixel thing means very little about the quality of the image, it's mostly about sensor size which cellphones obviously don't excel in due to the nature of the device. HTC decided to stray away from this, it's just sad people still look at numbers like that and say x phone is better due to megapixel's, and they lose sales due to that.

Fire convinced me :) . On simple specs it is not that great, but on features it is :D

Mother of features o_O

I was to lazy to open oom Fire's link, was hoping someone would post some features.

I was touching on one fallback. The camera is not the only reason. Hence the link to the spec comparison. Yes, cameras are a lsight bit skewed on phones, but the fact remains its still a better camera. As Oj0 pointed out the feature improvements are even better.

Its a utterly brilliant phone, love the fact that its available with quad or octa core processing power.
There won't be a rival for this phone for a long time to come.

Full plastic body? Why oh why? tired of these plastic fantastic designs.

*awaits the drop test fail *
*expects a screen replacement to cost 3k*

S4 design is sad .... nothing fancy (like iPhone ......)

HTC One takes the cake here

Seems that people still misunderstand the octacore processor - it has 4 low power A7 cores, and 4 high power A15 cores, so the idea is to have the high power processors when you need them, but low power cores when you don't. This should allow it to have both great performance, as well as long battery life, well that's the theory anyway. So it most likely will have longer battery life than the competition (in the case of the octacore processor version - that is) . If you had the option of a quad core, you will not gain anything by selecting it, you will only experience reduced battery life.

I'm also aboard, want something new, but I should add that the s2 does everything I want it to do, quickly and efficiently.

Don't think this phone wil revolutionise my life as the s2 did when I came from a blackberry

This is still far from good enough to entice me to upgrade from my S2. The only phone that's tempting at the moment is the HTC One. But I'll probably also skip this generation and wait for something truly revolutionary to come by.
