Hey guys,

So Ford wants my retirement cash to redo my brakes on my car. I know that it will cost about 2k if I go buy the pads myself and have someone install it. However I would prefer if I ford mechanic in his spare time can do it for me.

I don't know if anyone here knows someone that would be willing to do it for me?

What do you mean by redo your brakes? Disc? Shoes? Pads? What did they say is wrong?

Should have specified, they said that all four my pads needs to be replaced and it's metal on metal and along with that my front discs need to be skimmed. All kak in my opinion, car has 34k km on the clock, and I don't even do 20k mileage a year on it.

I had a look at the front pads, can still do another 2000 km on them, did not even bother looking at the rear pads as they should be more than fine still since the car is front wheel drive. In my opinion

How did you check the pads?when you hit the brakes to slow down, do you stay in gear or put the clutch in?

I just physically went and checked how much life is still left on the pad when peeking through the rim.

I gear down to slow down to avoid using brakes and only use brakes for harsh braking (when I need to) and to prevent the car from rolling.

Contact Tweak Performance in Kya Sands. The owner is a Ford nut and could easily help you.

Used mobile disc skimming here in Cape Town, they come out and skim the discs on the car at a cost of R1100 and if you have new pads they fit it for 'free' as well, squeaking brakes a thing of the past, try a Google search in jhb

What Ford is it? I showed my daughter how to replace the pads on her Fiesta. Took us all of 30 minutes to do both sides. Rears is on almost 100k km and still fine. Front pads came to less than R800 if I remember correctly.

Its a Fiesta ST. R800 sounds about right for the pads, I have replced mine before on a Polo, just know we had to get hold of a specific tool to remove the caliper from the pad.

Nope, no special tool needed if you know what you are doing. Right size spanner to loosen one bolt (and maybe the brake line retaining clip), big screw driver or G-clamp. That is all. No need to bleed or extra fluid. There are other ways, but this is what I do. On my Pathfinder, wife's S5 Audi and daughter's Fiesta it is all the same.

The other reason why I'm looking for a Ford mech is that the car is still under warranty, so don't know if ford's system will be able to detect that I did my brakes somewhere else and then void warranty.

Brakes you can do yourself. Its a 30 min job.

Ive asked ford regarding voided warrenties about that and they said it was fine..

They are trying to get away with daylight robbery (hoping to snag a quick sale from an ill-informed customer)

I got charged R1300 to take my car into a random tyre place to have my front brakes replaced and disks skimmed. - and they ripped me a new one. (Asking R2200 for a tyre that sells for R1100 at other places)

back brakes should last at least 2x longer than front pads. so i wouldnt be too stressed about that.

If you live close to the east somewhere I can get you into contact with a reputable mechanic that will help with this for a cheaper rate.

I have mentioned this in another thread, this whole scenario is the usual ford rip off, they tried this with me and another guy here. Don't waste your time with them. You can fit any brake pads you want, in fact you can go buy brembo pads which will likely be cheaper than the ford oem pads, it wont void your warranty. Skim your discs wherever and it wont void your warranty
