This is my attempt at documenting the FTTH installation process from a Telkom Techie.

Micro ducting to the telephone man hole on my lawn.

Fibre line pulled using the copper line.

The fibre termination block. 7 meters away from the manhole on my yard.

The said manhole

One of the two fibre strands to my home.

No breaks :D

its really thin...

Lazors omg...

the splice block up close and personal... I broke its virginity :p

The juicy stuff.

Spliced and done on the outside.

the splice block completed just before lock up and return to manhole.

The inside job

The ONT.

The whole process took 2hrs and 15mins till connection.

the speed results intl download.

Ja bra :)

[Edit] All organised through Vox, took 22 days from deposit until installation was complete. They said to expect 6-8 weeks.

Durbanville is 'n klipgooi van my af... :(

Nevermind dit, daar is VDSL (40mb) minders as 500m van my af (ander exchange), maar ek sit met fokken 4mb. Wat ~ 3 maande gevat het om te install.

upload seems very low 100down 10up?

AFAIK with ADSL, they limited the upload to prevent users from hosting servers at home. It could be a similar story for fibre but 10mbps is enough to host a decent server. It could just be to follow the past trends and allow them to charge more for symmetric lines.

Psst... The correct term for that "splice block" is a Splice Dome. The one you have there is a standard dome you'll find pretty much anywhere on poles next to the road, etc.

Those ducts on your lawn... They should be stripped back about 15cm and end caps (usually from Emtelle) installed on there to avoid water and crap going in there.

The technies know what they're doing. Pulling a fibre hard enough to break it is incredibly hard. A single fibre (such as the one you're holding) is so strong it'll rather cut your hands then break.

And that warning sticker is there for a reason. The lasers run at very, very high intensity and can cause instant damage to your retina if you look into an active fibre.

Enjoy!

ADSL is aschycronous, so by design it isn't for example 4Mb down and up.

The fiber for FTTH is generally GPON as it is cheaper than active ethernet. GPON is also aschycronous.

they are installing fibre in our street, like 5m from my house. There are no Telkom connection points near us, so i was wondering how do they get the cable all the way to a house?

I also heard that the Fibre packages that Telkom( MY ISP) offers are only 10mb, 20 mb, 40mb and 100mb lines. But there isn't an option to take uncapped. Only something like 50gb "soft cap"... which i'm not totally sure what it means. Anyone care to share? Also what is the best Fibre deal that you guys have come across??

Awesome! Thanks for the explanation :)

That's what I'm getting. for those who asked about ping, I get 170-180ms to most EU game servers.

Here's PTA to CPT

Where do you live?

And for those of you who don't know, you can run any adsl data account on your fibre line...

No idea... It worked with my webafrica account on Telkom infrastructure.
