With recency bias being thrown around, tried out a mid-year list with subsequent updates to see how much of a thing it actually is for me. Selections did change and ended up with a fair spread over the seasons for what its worth

So far 2023 has been the year of the delay, because "covid". Still hoping NieR actually gets completed at some point this year (Thanks Aniplex FFS) And now we wait for Zom 100. This year was also marked by Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season Final Edition¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Part 2 (Actual Final) .pdf .docx bringing down the curtain to a franchise I think was probably the most influential in bringing the modern anime era to the mainstream

Animation:
[Oshi no Ko] | Kanna Hirayama
Usually goes to Demon Slayer, but the Swordsmith Village arc has been my least favourite entry so far, animation and otherwise

Art style:
Hibike Eupho - Ensemble Contest | KyoAni
Also a mention for the Rurouni Kenshin remake. Some say the shiny effects don't suit the setting and tone, but I've I've liked the style used for refreshing this classic
Zom 100 also deserves a mention, the colour palette to cover the blood supposedly allowed the early broadcast slot this had

Music:
Oregairu Kan OVA | feel.
Just a 1 ep OVA, but with Megumi no Ame for the OP, Yui's ballade version of Hello Alone for her confession scene and Diamond no Jundo for the ED, this was enough of a reminder why the music in Oregairu played a large part in it being one of my favourite franchises of all time
NieR Automata came with some high expectations here and I think it met them fairly well

Direction:
Undead Girl Murder Farce | Lapin Track
I hadn't recognised the studio or any of the staff, but the direction had made this flow smoothly with the heavy dialiogue
[Oshi no Ko] and G-Witch also deserve mentions

Script:
G-Witch S2 | Sunrise
Started off with some calling it a Utena ripoff and yuri-bait but it became very much a Gundam series in the 2nd season. Felt the ending was weaker though, peaked towards the end of S1 and start of S2

Character Design:
Gridman Universe | Trigger
Mujina only got a 1 frame cameo in this movie unfortunately
Also a mention for G-Witch S2

OP:
Setsuna no Chikai | ToniKawa S2
Missing the bass line from Koi no Uta, but still has the Akari Kitou rap. Add those guitar riffs and this one is likely also going to be one of my all time favourites

Idol from [Oshi no Ko] also deserves a mention, the song was mainstream enough to top Billboard charts apparently

ED:
Mukyu Platonic | Isekai One Turn Kill Neesan

Also a mention for Red:birthmark from G-Witch S2 which was beautifully designed to give you that extra bit of depression after each ep

Seiyu:
Ai + Kaoru + Megumin + Yuzuriha + Sumi | Rie Takahashi
Rie's been everywhere this year, but just that scene for Ai was enough
Hayamin for Ryuu in Danmachi S4P2 also deserves a mention as well as Akari Kitou for Tsukasa in ToniKawa S2

Girl:
Mai Sakurajima | AoButa - Odekake Sister
The ice queen Yukino kept the throne warm for Mai queen until I got the chance to see her movie
For the debuts, Shizuka from Zom 100 derserves a mention

Guy:
Mahiro Oyama | Onimai
Thorfinn | Vinland Saga S2
Not sure if I should include my guy/girl/? Mahiro, but I have no enemies

Fight:
Zoro vs King | One Piece
Think it's better that they're splitting recaps into separate special eps now so that they have time to deliver scenes like this

Fanservice:
Yuusha ga Shinda! | LIDENFILMS
Inuhiro has been meme'd enough, but you get what you should have expected, as well as an unexpected Code Geass reference

Episode:
[Oshi no Ko] | Pilot
With the extended run time and theatrical release, this might be unfair to consider as an ep. Best experienced before you're spoiled
Zom 100 pilot ep would have been it if the bar hadn't been set so high

Movie:
AoButa - Odekake Sister | CloverWorks
Not quite the level as the previous entries to the franchise, but I still enjoyed it
Was also good seeing the Hibike Eupho franchise being revived, and the Gridman Universe conclusion

TV Series (Overall):
[Oshi no Ko] | Doga Kobo
Don't think it's going to be a gateway into idol anime in the same way Love is War was for the romcom genre, but it's still something special

I dont see the following anime on your list

Demon slayer sword village arc
How Reliahana ended up in the Duke's mansion
I got a cheat skill in another world and now im unrivalled in the real world
death mount death play

Demon Slayer is there, but just as a mention for animation. The final ep was the strongest of the season, but still stands that this season was my least favorite from the franchise

Those other 3 I haven't watched yet. Might watch them at some point, but feel like I've had my fill of isekai for now

Still early into the Summer season, but updated with impressions so far

Felt like the delays with Nier took away from the experience. Leaning towards now watiing for full BD realeases for everything and jumping off the seasonal train after these years. Maybe from next season, although Frieren was hyped up by the manga readers and might be a good follow

Saw that the source for Dead Mount Death Play was written by Ryohgo Narita (of Baccano fame) so will definitely watch the 1st cour, but waiting for the BD release for the 1st cour later this year
