Hey guys

Looking to back up my steam library on an External SSD or Flash Drive. Will you be able to play CSS or Dota 2 online from the flash drive ? Did some research and found some mixed results. Any advise as the deal below looks good

First question is why back up your steam library? And then why play from the backup?

I guess you’re just wanting to clear up some space? If that’s the case then I’d rather spend the money on a 120GB SSD. Even a SATA drive’s performance will smoke that flash drive in loading games.

For what it is worth I have found that if you buy a 2.5" SSD and put it into a USB3.0 external enclosure that supports UASP, it performs at around 80 - 85% of the performance if it were connected via SATA. So it's almost as good as using the SSD internally.

The enclosure I used is this one: takealot.com

And I used a Crucial MX500 SSD.

I agree with @iamgigglz that the flash drive you linked is likely to be much slower than an SSD, possibly even slower than an HDD. I don't think you could run games off that. But I don't have any personal experience with such flash drives so I could be wrong.

Thanks basically travel for work and sometimes stay overnight with nothing to do. Have an mid range laptop so can play CSS and Dota 2 but can't store it on the work pc.

Sorry for necro but I have some very recent experience with this. I have a coupla Lego games installed on a flash drive and my daughters play fine via USB 2.0 port on their Sandy Bridge PC. Windows 10 installed on SSD, graphics is HD5770 on a 720p monitor, and game video settings are all set to medium. I know it doesn't answer your Steam backup and Dota2/CSS specific questions but at least it speaks to gaming performance via USB in general.
