"Engineers more than double data transmission capacity over fiber-optic cables"

University of California, San Diego electrical engineers have invented a technology that could allow between a two- and fourfold increase in data transmission capacity for the backbone of Internet, cable, wireless, and landline networks over long distances, while reducing cost and latency (delay).

The future must hurry up and arrive. I am super excited that they are getting this stuff off the ground in the labs etc. but then the wait for it actually to be implemented makes me sad. Such is life I suppose.

When I saw the first few words of this thread: "Engineers more than double...."
I excitedly clicked the link cos I thought it would be "Engineers more than double their salary in South Africa"
Sigh, one can only hope I guess :(

The UC San Diego researchers’ approach is akin to a concert master who tunes multiple instruments in an orchestra to the same pitch at the beginning of a concert.
The laboratory experiments involved setups with both three and five optical channels, which interact with each other within the silica fiber optic cables
“We are pre-empting the distortion effects that will happen in the optical fiber,” said Bill Kuo, a research scientist at the Qualcomm Institute, who was responsible for the comb development in the group.

possibly work needed on component drivers, and most likely the ISP's will need some additional standard to comply to, which involves guidelines and governing bodies
just how long till we see the results we want, any body?
