Awhile ago I was toying with the idea of buying a cheap Miata or similar to learn some track driving, but one of my friends pointed me in the direction of sim racing. I've always been a FPS player and never played any racing games apart from NFS. Spent ~30 hours in Assetto Corsa on a controller and the rest is history. Bought a used wheel and pedal set here on carb and enlisted @Spike727 's help to build my own frame/rig.
I showed him a few designs I liked and what I needed adjustable. We came up with the following;
The wheel is mounted on a plate that can easily be replaced when I eventually upgrade to something more spicy. This in turn is mounted to an assembly that can move up and down. The seat can move forward and back as well as up and down. The screen is mounted on a vesa desk mount, mounted on a tab in the rig. The pedal set is screwed into a piece of wood at an angle for the moment. This is likely the first piece of equipment I upgrade, so I did not want to invest time or make something permanent now. The seat and rails is pulled from a F30 BMW.
Build Log (part 1 of 2):
Yster pappie!
Dirty BMW F30 seat from the scrapyard. The leather is still in fantastic condition, just dirty.
Barefoot and ready to weld!
Mock fit to get a rough idea of lengths and overall size of the rig
Starting with outside frame
Cross brace and tabs in place for seat mount. The seat attaches with riv nuts, these things are amazing. (Spike's toe tax included)
Seat on! All good.
