Hi everyone

Need some purchasing advice on the monitor below.

Currently own a Samsung 24inch BX2450 1080p TN monitor (yes it's old but served me well, and for the time was an excellent monitor) and feel it's time for a little treat myself moment and long overdue upgrade.

So wanna make the jump to 27inch 1440p 144hz screen and had the below model in mind as it fits the budget perfectly and currently on special. (was in the market for the IPS variant, but that is very scarce used and new way to costly.)

Dell S2722DGM 27

Been reading up on reviews and such quite a bit, and for most part it scores quite well but there are quite a few mixed reactions and the only major issues being black smearing (general thing with VA panels it seems)

Went to read up on this and the below is probably the best representations of this on the specific monitor:

This one guy claims he had this very weird issue with the colors shifting, but think something else wrong there.

Review:

Primarily play Single player story driven games (ARPG /RPG), not really into the fast paced competitive gaming scene or games like Apex /BF/Cod and such at this point in time.
Probably the only game i am going to be playing and reason for mostly getting it now is Diablo 4, but want to try and purchase an all rounder as well.

As someone that never owned a VA panel or a curve monitor before hoping for someone on the site that owns this specific model, and can provide some feedback and opinions on this, as also unfortunately don't know someone personally that has one of these models.

Is the curve distracting or does one get use to it quickly in regards to gaming etc ?

Does the curve majorly influence normal working / browsing in Windows ? (like distorted image and such)

As per the Ratings site they state:
The Dell S2722DGM has good text clarity. We recommend running the Window ClearType wizard if you're on a PC; otherwise, there are some text clarity issues with diagonal lines,

Does the colors appeared washed out to the sides or in general even after calibrating ?
Is the black smearing effect a real deal breaker and very distracting while gaming (mostly darker scenes) ?

Any other issues to take note of ?

Any advice / feedback will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks for reading and in advance,

This is up to the individual, some people get used to it very quickly while others continuously find it weird. The immersive effect when watching full screen video is a plus, this tends to also translate to first person type games.

Would not recommend this for graphics work like photoshop, "straight lines" on the screen are not actually straight.

I use this monitor at work, which also forms part of my testing rig and I connect to laptop for some games.

I did pick issue on older cards like rx 570 it dimms the display even on dp or hdmi, which I find very weird? I cant seem to find setting to fix it. Have tried make it look normal, but just cant find a way.

Newer cards the display is bright and no issues, overall a good monitor I dont have much bad things to say about it.

The monitor is very bright for more a mid range monitor which I find pretty good.

Gaming is good I don't have any issues, mainly play COD. I did not clock much time on it, due to this monitor being at work.

I went from a 1080p TN to a 1440p curved VA (K3G3R).

Contrast is really nice.

The smearing is noticeable in dark scenes. It applies more to FPS games where there view shifts quickly. I don't find it too distracting but it's definitely there. Some people are bothered by it a lot, you won't know until you've tried.

I got used to the curve within the first day. It's nice, neither a killer feature nor a deal breaker.

Unless you're a super-power-user I doubt you'd notice issues of colours at the edge of the screen and text clarity etc. Those comments are aimed more at people doing fine design work.

If I could do it again I'd rather go IPS than VA (e.g. the S2721DGF). I think the smearing is probably an issue that is more "jarring" in games than worse contrast (i.e. contrast is the same all the time, whereas smearing only appears sometimes and can break immersion). But I don't hate the VA so much that I feel I need to get rid of it, so it's not thaaaat bad.

You didn't ask for this but here it is anyway: 1440p 144Hz imposes way higher demands on your PC, both CPU and GPU, than 1080p 144hz. Games look really nice at that res but be prepared to pay for hardware upgrades. /2c

If VA panel is a problem OPT for Dell S2721DGFA 27" (2560x1440) 165Hz 1ms IPS it can be had for about R6000-7000 second hand.

I have one and it's great

Thanks for everyone's feedback so far, greatly appreciate it.

Colleague of mine mentioned he has a Curved VA panel and that i am welcome to come check and test it out, so plan to do that first, like they say you won't know if you haven't tried, before making a final decision.

The overall consensus does however seem to be to stretch the budget a little more and go for IPS from a gaming point of view, as mentioned although sometimes minimal the "Black smearing" is definitely present and can be somewhat distracting to some.

@goldfritter Thanks for that detailed feedback, and on that last part:

Very good point, i have taken that into consideration, but at the same time only factored in D4 and not any other more demanding games, so will defs need to do a little more research and check some benchmarks.

I currently have a RTX 2060 Super card, which for most part is good for 1080p games but have a strong feeling it won't hold up for more demanding titles when the jump to 1440p is made.

I've got S2721DGF which I bought on launch and have been super happy with it. Upgraded from a 120hz TN panel to this.
Depending on where in CT you are you are welcome to come check it out if you want to make an informed choice before spending your money.

@Serenath - I also want to add my 2 cents here. I upgraded from a TN panel to a VA panel and I absolutely could not stand the VA panel for gaming. Your mileage may vary I guess.

I ended up selling the VA monitor and bought the Dell S2721DGF and it has been an absolute dream for gaming.

Personally I would not buy a VA panel, and save up a bit more cash to get an IPS monitor for any type of gaming... movies/work is a different story.

As others have mentioned, the S2721DGFA is a really good monitor to consider - I owned it at one point. Doesn't look like Wootware has any in stock, but keep an eye for 2nd hand options on Carbonite, I'm sure I've seen a few up for sale.

If you expect to own this new monitor as long as you've owned your current monitor, I'd get an IPS and not feel the need to buy a new monitor sooner than intended. Saving up a little more to get an IPS will just save you the hassle of probably eventually getting one.

Not at all - had a 34" curved monitor at one point (AW3423DW) and I enjoyed it. I didn't technically 'enjoy' the curve of the monitor or felt it provided me anything, it was just there and I was okay with it. Was a little weird going back to a flat panel - kinda felt like the panel was curving in the opposite direction for the first few days.

Does the curve majorly influence normal working / browsing in Windows ? (like distorted image and such)
I didn't work on my curved 34" monitor often, but when I did, I felt there were no draw backs to it being curved. Not sure how it would fair when you're doing something like detailed designs that need accuracy, although I doubt it would have any effect.

Thanks again for everyone feedback and input, greatly appreciate it.

Decided to stretch the budget, and went with the DELL S2721DGFA monitor. (found a very good deal on Carb)

Actually saw the 2722DGM Curved model on display in a store and was immediately glad i went with the flat IPS monitor rather.

@J37 was my exact thought as plan to keep the monitor for quite some time, so made more sense to spend a little more now on the model i really wanted than to try something else and risk regrets.

Could not have said it better myself, this screen is an absolute dream to work on and everything you throw it as just a visual splendor and gaming is an absolute dream.
