i5 10600 (non K)
MSI MPG Z490 gaming plus

RTX 3070ti

gaming at 2560x1440 165hz

Option 1 - 11700K (2nd hand R5500) performance increase seems "okay" based on the benchmarks I've seen. But most if not all of them are synthetic benchmarks... so im not really sure ??

Option 2 - 13600K + new mobo >> much more expensive but performance increase with the new gen looks very good

Also, I'm planning on getting a 4K 144hz screen in the not too far future with a GPU upgrade. Is it true that CPU's become more insignificant when gaming at higher resolutions?

Jump to 13th gen is much better, so if you do plan to go to NVidia 40-series at some point, that would be the better option.

11th gen was badly received as a re-hash "token" release for the sake of it.

Grab a <R7000 5800X3D, a R2000 B550 (not ASUS) and JD’s Samsung B-die. Sorted.

11700K at R5500 is not good value vs a R4K 12600K or a cheap R4000 5800X (seen it happen). Good Z590s are also hard to come by at fair deals.

Good D4 Z690s and Z790s can sometimes be had cheap, but generally people don’t sell them. IMO AMD is the only sensible route if you want value for money.

At 1440p with a 3080, the 11700k is around 2.2% better than a 10600k. Not worth the upgrade at all.

At 1440p a 13600K is around 16.7% better than a 10600k, which is nice but not exactly life-changing.

At 4k, the 13600K is around 3.6% better than the 10600K. You can decide if that is worth the upgrade, but as you can see the CPU makes very little difference at all at 4k.

If you're serious about 4k, I'd recommend option 3: save up for a better GPU.

You're likely more GPU than CPU bottlenecked though, surely? I'm sure you'll get better gains from a GPU upgrade than a CPU upgrade.

Could be wrong though.

Not insignificant, but yes there is less workload on the cpu relative to the gpu at higher resolutions to an extent.

You want the best gaming CPU, 5800X3D. want more bang for buck, the 5700/5600 are great with cheap boards and good DDR4. Remember the infinity fabric max at around 2000mhz so anything above 4000 is basically a guaranteed pointless buy.

You had much luck slapping a 5800X3D into an LGA 1200 motherboard? I haven't seen it done.

It might fit but it won't be pretty for either might need more than a slap but a push and a shove might do the trick.
