Corrupt ZIP File Fix?

Hi all
I'm helping a friend to try and unfuck a ZIP file that was made ages ago.
We've tried all the usual suspects to unzip it 7Zip, WinRar, Winzip, Universal Extractor etc etc, in the app itself and in the command line.
The result or error message is usually along the lines of "Cannot open the file as [zip] archive" or "Could not determined archive type"

Running it through the few Zip file repair apps has not yielded any better results so, anyone have any experience in the above? How can we get this damned file extracted?

sometimes renaming the extension to .rar, .7z or can trick software to try and extract data.
Otherwise you can try using a cmd command to extract or a hex editor software but that can be tricky

Mmm yea let me try that, I've tried everything else lol
Failing that I'll see if I can get someone knowledgeable to poke around with the Hex

Its some financial / tax stuff so I don't think my friend would be willing to send it out, thank you for the offer though!
