Hi everyone this is my first thread on here so someone let me know if i stuff up anything. Alright so i have been working for about two years now and i actually bought my first car and renting my own place. Feeling confident with my stable job and thinking my car and rental payments will definitely give me a great chance to get myself a cell phone contract. Turns out this is not the case apparently, I don't have enough credit to take out a cellphone contract??? This really is the weirdest shit nonsense ever. They suggested I go open up some clothing accounts first before i can get a cellphone contract. Does anyone know of a better faster way around this? I really need a phone and the one i'd like to get only makes sense for me to get on a contract due to the price.

When you go apply at the cellphone stores for example Vodacom the system Morpheus/M2 on which the credit vetting is based on determines an outcome based on your current credit status so in this instance yes it seems you do not have enough under your name which is why you were advised to open up accounts ,,,

10 years ago I had a client who earned more then 100K PM and was refused a contract based on the above

Only way to get through this is to go to a clothing store (Mr Price, markhams etc) buy some t shirts and pay it over the 6 months and try again.

happened to me when i started working at 19 and couldn't get anything on my name until i went through the same rubbish.

My credit score is zero. I opened a Vodacom and Telkom the weekend. Was about 3 days for them to "confirm" whatever, but did get approved. I also do not have any other accounts my credit score is really 0 XD

How did you do this magic you speak of i really want a phone i cant wait 6 months for this

I have no idea. They did a fraud check or something which took vodacom 3 days and telkom 2 days. Both gave me the OK, and now I have two contracts :p

If they want your money and you have stable job with payslips and proof of residence then someone who wants your money bad enough will give you a contract. Dont fall for this nonsense of making more debt to go into debt

Lol you are dying to get a contract and I will never ever get a contract again. I am big into saving money and cutting the contract was a massive saving. Its now prepaid and afrihost. I used to pay R1300 a month for my wife and my contract now we pay R200 a month. That's a saving of R1100 or R26 400 over 24 months. To each their own I believe but just think twice. I choose not to have a contract and I can do what i want :)

I did however get an uncapped Telkom LTE contract. I mean who can beat uncapped LTE at R625 a month :)

A slight derail but how do you check your credit score? I never had any issues back when i took over my contracts from my parents. they just wanted 3 months of payslips and proof of residence.

I am about to do exactly the same thing, my contract expires next month, and I am already on Afrihost mobile data, and then its just pay as you go, and whenever you want a new phone you sell your current one, add a few bucks and buy it outright, not this 24 month finance BS.

OP, do yourself a favor, save up some money, buy a phone cash, and just buy airtime/data as you go along, you will save a ton of money, you will also then have more disposable income, that will come in handy once you want to buy something like the flat you are renting now :)

I use Transunion, it costs R340 per year I think, and you get a full credit report and your score, and a bunch of other features.

Transunion offers everybody one free report per year.

Your report yes, but not your score, and also its not just Transunion all the other credit bureaus do as well, they are required to.

I use ClearScore. It doesn't give you ALL the details but it does give you a rather good idea. It's free

Why don't you buy a phone cash and then get a Sim only contract? This should be on a month to month basis in any case and they are more willing to give you a contract without a device.

I have a feeling your contract price was less than R500 pm? I could be wrong. But I know that when I did the same thing as OP, I got rejected based on the same reasoning. I was only allowed to get a contract that was less than like R450pm or something.

Got my sugar mommy wife to sign up the contract in her name.

My advice is stay as far away from a contract as possible. ALL the cellphone providers in South Africa are known criminals (I can prove this statement), and they WILL extort money from you somewhere along the line.

I understand the want for a new phone, but it is really not worth it. Save up and buy a cellphone cash. A Toyota you own is always better than a BMW owned by the bank.
