How much do you want? Probably more than I can afford I'm sure;)

Well make me an offer:
Canon 500D (about 4000 shots taken) with kit lens which aint used
Canon 28-135 IS USM
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 580EX II Flash
Lowepro Flipside Bag
Cactus V4 wireless triggers and some stuff.

That Sx210is is amazing dude! Pocket size with massive features. Id say thats best in class for the price. DSLR just cost crap loads as you DO NEED lenses etc to make them work really well and believe me, Glass is expensive!

Id recommend you go read the review. :)

Is there a reason you're specifically looking for a DSLR right now? Another option to consider is an advanced compact, such as the SX210 suggested, or something like the Panasonic FZ35 (very good reviews, 18x zoom with full manual controls, 720p recording and can take filters, which the SX210 can't).

Advanced compacts are more compact and hence easier to travel with and can act as your DSLR backup later. They are also easier for the other half to use as well :)

EDIT: Panasonic and sx210 are similarly priced. Canon benefit over the Panasonic is primarily pocketability, but if you were considering a DSLR, I'm guessing that isn't a major. If you're in Cape Town, maybe check out the SA Camera showroom at Century City, they should have both for you to play with.

Reason I want dSLR is myself and the missus want to get into photography and would like to at least have sufficient equipment.

A mate of mine is a pro photographer and has the 5D, 5Di and the 7D and has suggested we go 450D if we want to learn properly.

550D is the way to go if you wanna start learning and think youll be doing it for a long time. 550 matches the 7D in quality and noise...

400 / 450D is a very good starter kit, I'm using a 1000d and love it to bits! The lenses may be expensive but it helps if you have friends with Canons ;)

I may have to contact infernox regarding that flash !

Cool, thanks for all the info guys, I've found a 450D in excellent condition for R4200 which I think is a very good price.

Was it just the body or did it come with the kit lens as well? Either way, that is a very, very good price. I got a 450D for the wife's birthday a few months back and I paid much more than that (albeit new though). Then came the lenses, then the tripod, then the flash, then the...

Yeah, charger, AVI cable, 18-55mm lense and a 1GB card. I bought a 4GB card and will probably get a tripod soon as well.

The camera has only had 6000 shutter actuations and doesn't have a single scratch on it.

Only 6000 ?! I think I'm an addict then ^_^

Congrats on the find, a great camera !

Yeah people will argue whether to buy Canon or Nikon but I am a Canon fan. Got the 350D and the 450D and they are awesome cameras. I also have the 75-200mm Macro zoom lens and the 300-500mm zoom lens and of course the fancier, the bigger and the wider you go the more expensive these lenses get

You have not made a mistake. The lenses are generally quite expensive but worth every cent in the long run...

BTW that price you paid was a VERY good price.

Excellent, I'm glad to hear it.

Now I just have to figure out how to use it:p

A mate of mine has been a pro photographer for 10+ years and I asked him what I should buy next. He reckons play with the camera until you get frustrated then buy whatever it is that will ease that frustration. He reckons any other way and you never know why you buy the extras which is an important part of learning.

Anyway, just my luck he had a mad moment and drove to CPT last night from Jozi just for fun, now he can show me...
