Hey guys

So I was just wondering what amounts second hand dealers like we buy cars and cars.co.za are charging to sell cars. I am looking at buying a car and according to my calculations they are charging me about 30k just for selling the car to me. There was according to them no repairs done etc.

I know they have to make money but that seems hectic.

Really depends on the market. Right now, the economy is struggling. New car sales are in the doldrums as people can't afford new cars. That makes the used-car market ripe for profits. Pricing is rough right now and they know they can make pretty much whatever margin they want to as it's still cheaper than buying new.

Is it normal? Well, in this climate, yea. In pre-covid times, no not really.

Yeah its rough. I don't know if I should bargain with them lol.

I might try that. Its just difficult trying to bargain long distance.

Normally best to bargain long distance. They normally say bargain before you test drive, cause if you fall in love you won't want to bargain any more.

What are you looking at getting and what's the budget? Most cars at dealers have some fat int hem, you can probably organize a bit of a discount or a bit extra on your trade-in. Have to ask though.

Looking for a Nissan qashqai 1.5dci. total price should be about 280k but the total is 310k. That is with my trade in that i stil owe on. The price is low on the car as there are some little problems and the a non immediate problem with the clutch. I have a ford focus 1l ecoboost that im trading in. Never buying ford ever again in my life.

Second hand car dealers are scum
It takes a lot of work to wade through the BS and salesman pitch. It also helps to research the known problems that the car that you are planning to buy has and to have some mechanical knowledge.

If you go to test the car bring paper towel with
Check the fluids. Is there enough? Is it dark? Does it look like it has contaminants in it? Are there any leaks? Can you smell fuel?
Check brake disk thickness - just an eyeball measurement is enough.
Check the brake fluid, if a car has not been maintained well it will be a dead giveaway.

Check body panels. Are they all the same colour? Do they line up well? Is the general condition of the paint good?
Check under the car for crash damage repair. Are there any kinks that look out of place?
Check the interior. Are all the carpets there? Are the carpets OEM? Is there a smell? Are the plastics in good shape? Are the seats in good shape? Is the steering wheel in good shape?
Check the wheels. Is there curb rash? Are there any buckles? Are the tires the same brand? How old are the tires?

On the test drive
Is the alignment good? Does it pull to a side at any point in time (accelerating, braking and cruising)? Is the wheel straight?
Are there any vibrations? Does the motor run smooth? Any noises that get louder with speed?
Are there any clunks from the suspension?
Does AC and heat work?
Do the seats feel comfortable?

The list goes on for long.

How much is the shortfall on the Ford? As in, how much are they having to load on to the Qashqai?

R310k is brand new Magnite, Baleno GLX money.

I did ask my brother to check and tesdrive the car and he was happy. The clutch just takes high. Otherwise in a good condition same colour all over the car etc.

50k. U tesdrive the magnite no love for it. Baleno is not a good looking car for me. I was interrested in the fronx but they can't get them. And it is over budget.

You're loading R50K!?

Dude, fix whatever is wrong with the Fiesta and keep it, that's madness.

At least its a manual but I must add we loved our 2013 1.6 Qashqai until things went wrong and we needed to pay in. Price clutch and brakes and add that to the total and then decide if its solid. Also, any major services coming up?

Especially considering the clutch is already taking high. Could be on it's way out. Expensive fix.

Out of all the secondhand dealers Webuycars is by far the worst

I'll definitely sell to them but never buy

JUst go on hello peter and look at the shear amount of fake 5 star reviews they leave on themself to combat the flooding 1 stars

Yeah that is about 20k. Plus minus. Im not sure about major services will need to check

Looking back at old receipts for the petrol the clutch and car service combo was around R18k (labour intensive). The mechie we use is an actual mechanic (works on a lot of classic cars too) and not a parts swapper so you could maybe get it cheaper although I doubt Nissan would cost less.

I luckily know a guy so if it breaks I know it will be done properly.

All good, just something to consider in your sums. We were hit for around R38k in a short span with our Qashqai which is when we decided to part ways with it. Thats said someone got a car with all the major items replaced but given the wife commutes between CT and Stellenbosch daily we couldn't risk a breakdown.

I am going to take a mecanical breakdoen warranty with it. Yes I know they dont cover everything fully but it at least breaks the biggest amounts

What other cars(suv's) could you guys recommend? I need something highish as my back gives me problems. Something around the 200k amount?

Mechanical breakdown warranty is mostly just a way for dealerships to get out of the consumer protection act and they get commission from it of course. If you do your homework and just save some money each month in order to finance any work that needs to be done, I think you are fine without those warranties. If you look after your car, it will look after you - for the most part.
Also, they are few, but there are dealers around who will honour the 6 month consumer protection act.
