Buying Advice: Mazda CX5 or Rav 4

This is the number one lite suv in RSA. But shesh the running costs of a honda.

Wait what??

I was under the impression that its cheap as chips to run, with only the cvt oil service being a couple of grand every 30-60k km?

I took one look at the RAV4 and didn't look at it again. I echo the previous comment about the RAV4 being 'agricultural'. The interior quality cannot be compared to the CX5. Can't comment on the mechanical capabilities, but my money would be on the Mazda brand > Toyota brand - although the difference will be tiny.

Have you done insurance quotes between them? You talk about fuel efficiency, but a R100-R200 difference in monthly insurance premium will completely obviate a small difference in fuel efficiency. Unless you're into hugging trees - in which case driving less is far more impactful than the small difference in fuel economy.

Depending on how long you expect to keep it, the resale may be important, but this class of car can survive many different life stages easily, so you can keep it for a long time.

But then you have to compare the age that you're buying the vehicle at. Best case is to compare the prices at the 3 year mark (i.e. 2018 models) and see what level of depreciation has already been factored it. I expect that you will find that the CX5 will initially depreciate faster and you can pick up a deal!

If you're really stuck, consider renting each of them for a day or two. It is hella expensive, but so is trading in the car after 2 years because you find that you hate it. You may find that there are silly little things that sway your decision, like the position of the headrest blocking your view of a gate when you reverse into your driveway.

Good luck - new cars are exciting!

Nope we have had mutliple hondas. The smaller cars are cheaper not the suv. or MPV.

The toyota and nissan are the cheapest to service. Honda always has extra to do during the service and the part are not cheap. Brake pads are expensive. Hence why we sold it. Honda with service plan also was 'invoiced' the most

Well, since it’s come back from the dead…. I can confirm that Mazda service costs are insane.

An oil change (although the dealer claimed it was more than an oil change) on a Mazda 2, 3 years back was R3500. The dealer claimed it was special oil, bla bla bla… that they check other stuff, bla bla bla. That’s when I told them that they were crazy and have been doing services myself since. Thankfully the gearbox oil doesn’t need changing, it’s got a cam chain and plugs are replaced every 120k. Plugs are around 1K a set.

Even VW dealership serviced my car for cheaper lol. These days I'll just buy what I need from goldwagen and pay a mechanic to do it. Much cheaper

Why are the running costs higher?

I have had multiple. Every thing is expebnsive (servicing, parts). Some parts are Honda dealer only. Brake pad replacement at Honda was approx 3500. Same part from Midas 550. They also threaten to void your service plan if you replace the parts at a non honda dealer. Still have a Honda thou. They do not keep alot of parts locally and sourcing is a nightmare atm (my dealer issue)

VTEC YO LO

@John the Joller He jumped on you quick. did he atleast buy you a drink first?
