Bought these from a friend over the weekend. Decided I would rather go HD800 in the long run than have 10 headphones, so out goes all the inferior headphones! :D

Looking forward to your views on the HD800 (or are you going with the S revision?). Glws btw. I would have liked to hear your take on the 600's vs the 250's (will follow this thread though).

Not sure I'll ever sell me 990 or 770 (and as of today, my X2). Next up for me is probably the HD6xx or HD650 and then the HD800S. Too attached my headies to let them go, so it seems I'm forced to just collect the bloody things.

Im just going for the 800 variant for now. I would also like to know the difference and be able to do an A/B test. If she's not gone within a week I might keep her for another month or so. We can do a comparison then and send the headsets to each other no problem. Or organise a listen, I'm willing to pull through to yEour side to demo that x2.

HD650 is a great addition to make. Personally I prefer the sound of the HD58X, but wish it was the same build quality as the HD600/650. I have a HD600 in my collection as well, because it is such a solid benchmark. I'm looking at adding the HD800 and a Fostex thx00 to the collection within the next month or so. Something more fun and less serious for a change. ;)

We will be in touch dude, as soon as things chill out at work a bit.

Pls hit me up if you decide to sell the 600 sometime (not right now as I'd like to stay happily married).

A small correction ... The DT990 is not an inferior headphone. It is an expertly-designed and beautifully built pair (in Germany nogal) and one of the most comfortable pairs ever. I found the slight treble emphasis to give music some extra sparkle and TV/movies great excitement. Cannot fault your want for the HD800 though. I am on my third one having and still regard the original HD800 as the highest resolution transducer ever made (and I have compared to other epic cans like AKG K1000 and Stax electrostatics). I agree with a fairly common viewpoint that a carefully EQd HD800 beats the HD800S on most fronts. If you really like the extra distortion you can get the SDR mod for EUR50. That plus a balanced cable you can knock together for around R1500 turns a R8k used HD800 into a R25k HD800S.

Impedance :)

Beyer pitched the 250ohm models at recording studios and 600ohm at the audiophile market. In theory lower impedance headphones may see a slight mid-bass bump if the damping factor (the headphone impedance divided by amp output impedance) goes below 8. So decades ago when amp output Z was typically 25 to 50 ohms the industry standard was 600ohm headphones. There are technical arguments how the voice coils of high impedance cans are thermally more stable. In practice differences are extremely slight, with the 600ohm needing a bit more current to get going, but ultimately offering lower distortion, slightly better resolution and dynamic impact.

Head-fi has a couple of threads on the differences between consumer (32ohm), professional (250ohm) and audiophile reference (600ohm) models as these are marketed in Germany. I will post the links if I get a chance.

Thanks Scuba!

I can also go dig them up. I would very much like to read through those.
