Best Monitor Placement, Viewing Angles and More... (Gaming Setup Basics)

So in pursuit of building myself a proper gaming setup, next on my list to purchase was a new screen. I wanted to mount it on the wall and couldn't quite figure how high I wanted it.
Out of curiosity I did some research into screen placement and came across some stuff that I think is very important and has not been addressed on the forums yet (well not that I could find anyway)

So through my research I found that basically when your'e seated at your setup, your desk and chair should be at the right heights so that when sitting up your elbows and knees bend at perfect 90° angles to avoid bad posture, strain on the neck and back and causing long term problems.

Now with the monitor, placement is important.
  • The top of the monitor should be inline with eye level
  • The middle of the monitor should be about 15° from your viewing angle and is directly in-front of you
  • The bottom of the monitor should be no more than 30° viewing angle from when at rest (looking straight forward)
  • The size of your screen can make things a bit difficult, a 32 inch screen would have to be placed differently to a 24 inch screen
  • The monitor should be at minimum, arms length away from you to reduce eye strain
  • Now this is controversial I know but ideally there should be no tilt to your screen as according to an article i came across this can cause damage to specific parts of the eyes and neck so avoid that I suggest

Now why you ask, or perhaps you didn't, this is all to reduce the effects of hour long work or gaming sessions in-front of the pixel box as this can lead to dad's favorite comment about damaging your eyes, strain on the back, shoulders and neck, carpal tunnel syndrome. Maybe this will help with these things maybe it wont but hopefully someone found this helpful at least.

Now some other things worth mentioning that may be more obvious...
  • Ensure our room is at least dimly lit to reduce eye strain, preferably an overhead light but I did this by getting a USB led kit and putting it on the back of my screen, looks snazzy and reduces eye fatigue
  • Make sure your chair sufficiently supports your back while you are sitting, preferably with a neck and headrest (I always thought those cushions on gaming chairs neck rest were a gimmick until I got one and my oh my was it worth)
  • Try reduce the amount of glare, not only because it doesn't look pretty but glare actually further strains your eyes, now in my case this was impossible as I am right next to a window but still worth mentioning
  • Ensure you are using the correct font size for applications such as browsing or typing to mitigate having to strain your eyes or use poor posture
  • Keyboard and mouse placement is also important, try ensure that they are far enough way to achieve a slightly beyond 90° angle on the elbows, ensuring your wrists don't bend too much
  • Brightness is another factor to consider, I suggest getting an app called f.lux its free and a great little app. It automatically adjusts your screens brightness based on the time of day, your personal sleep schedule has various different modes for different lighting environments and doesn't impede gaming too much as it can be switched off for full-screen apps if you want.

Well that's my rant about something nobody really cares about but should. I hope this helps at least one person out there and just to put this out there if you googled this you'd get the same stuff, this is mostly copy paste so I am taking no credit. Cheers guys, stay frosty.
 
Most of the monitor stuff you already sort out when you care about gamma-shifting as much as I do (if you don't have IPS). Because anything other than that setup aggravates gamma-shifting.
