Hi All,

I'm busy buying a property and will be doing a lot of diy in the next 2 months.

I'll be needing a range of tools, from paint scrapers, rollers etc. To screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters and all general around the house tools.

Can anyone recommend a good hardware store that's well priced, not too worried about area, anywhere around cape town is good...

Obviously there's Build It and Builders Express but wondering if there's anywhere else others may prefer...

De La Rey. Oh wait...

There were some mom and pop shops I quite liked, but they couldn’t compete on variety or pricing.

One of my alltime favourite hardware shops is Toolcraft. They are in Plumbstead but offer free shipping on orders over R1250. I have never been to the store but I have purchased alot from them online.

Thanks, I'll see if I can check them out :)

Also sometimes Mica are priced ok, you also have brights.

Just know your prices more or less and you should be ok.

I'm emigrating soon, and have a box full of scrapers, brushes, rollers, trays and drop sheets if you want.

So signing up for a builders card will give you 10% off your first order which might help if you know all the stuff you need. Another one is brights which you can sign up for a card as well and this will give you 5% of most of the products you purchase in every visit. hope this helps

Thanks everyone will check and compare some simple items for comparisons :)

If you are willing to buy online, I find topdog tool shop pretty good and delivers quickly.

Late to the party?

For fine wood working, Toolcraft offer a lot of specialist tools that many other places don't.
General carpentry and building I go to Brights and Builders.
Always compare prices. I find Brights to have better everyday prices than most, but Builders can have good deals.

Gelmar for cupboard handles, Franke taps, soft close hinges and draw runners and other smaller supplies
Eagle lighting for lights.
Timbacore for treated lumber.
The Steele Shoppe in Kuilsriver for steel.

some items are great quality and a fair price (they will last)

Some are junk quality and are not fit for purpose. i.e midas ratchet set is the same price and much better quality. similar with certain spanner sets.

If you are looking for electrical tools and electrical goodies, have a look at Atlantic Electrical(Parklands), Okovango electrical(Kraaifontein), Plumstead electrical(the name says it).
The tools will most likely be more expensive then a hardware, but you wont get the same quality. I still cut though 4mm screws with a 5 year old plyers that was used every day.

Toolcraft are brilliant - also sometimes called BPM Toolcraft. I've been in to the store and they are great for asking advice and not trying to upsell you. They are also clear on which tools its okay to go cheap and cheerful for and which ones its important to go for quality.

But they are just for tools - not things wood etc.
