Battlefield 4

I have no problem with them releasing an improved BF3 , while the multiplayer is amazing , its also fundamentally broken . If they add things such as revised netcode, regular patches , no more client side hit detection , battle recorder etc and keep the core gameplay the same ill be happy :D

However with EA's recent trend and DICE's seeming inability to fix in game issues , I worry its going to be just as broken , with some shiny new toys.

Until I get more details , im going to vote with my wallet and not pre-order.

So just to make it clear EA Dice release new content and charge for it so people complain about it. This is the year 2199...oh wait sorry 2013 where developers who produce new content based on sophisticated game engines need to get paid for said content, ultimately every add on content to BF3 was essentially new substantial game content that was coded and developed based on a sophisticated game and graphics engine, the people who did it are not some run at the mill home coders releasing mods and these people like us like to be paid for their work. R450 odd for a base game and 5-6 expansions and a FTP server is pretty cheap if you ask me.

Before you slam EA as the big bad money machine, which to an extent EA has influenced good titles and made them bad but this happens a lot. Heck Intel will give you 5% better and make you buy a new motherboard just to get that, all the while slapping a $30 incriment on top but I don't hear any objections to that cash cow.

Do not think for one second think that the developers are getting all of their hard earned money from you. Large publishers like EA pay developers a certain amount to create a game and then you pay the publisher for that game. If the game sells 10 million copies and they only required to sell 500 thousand copies to cover the costs then it's the publisher that scores. So it is in the publishers interest to cut down on production costs as much as possible by reusing old material and spend more and more on marketing to increase initial sales. How many ads did Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2 have compared to BF3 and now BF4? EA has changed for the worse, there's no denying it.

Actually the system works a little different, publishers front the money to design the game, the first x amount of copies sold is to recoup costs after which then only the developer gets paid, payment system however works on a inclining block the more they sell the more the developer gets and less the publisher

So up front the developer gets no money from sales, and only gets after a said target has been reached.

Also considering that it's the publishers that has to do ad campaigns, and this costs some serious money, considering COD costs nearly 3 billion just on ad campaigns.

Tomb raider for example, has sold 3.4 million odd copies, 204 million in revenue, it relative peanuts when you start, deducting development costs, ad and printed media, from that total...and tomb raider needs to reach 5 million copies sold, to avoid the game being a big old flop....

I don't have a problem with dlc ( not that iv ever bought any) but day one patches and dlc that is a blatant cut out of the original game/storey is bs.
Dlc, in my mind, should really only be cosmetic or extra maps for mp. In the old days the only sp stuff you got was either patches for problems (usually a while after release) or an add on at below full retail price.

Jup current development costs have skyrocketed. Just as an example those 4k textures we love so much take ages and lots of money to make compared to the simple 128/256 textures of yesteryear. Not even to mention the cost of animation, mocap and all the other goodies.

I know I didn't get it spot-on with my comment about the game publishing system. The problem is I don't want to type out a book about every single deal between publisher and developer, as most deals are unique. I do however feel that publishers should stop wasting millions and even billions on marketing "could have been great" games and invest more in the development of the game, in turn making those games truly great. If it's a good game then people will wan't to talk about it and the game's reputation will spread like wildfire. The DayZ mod is a good example of this.

Actually textures costs a buck a piece give or take ;). Not really but they are the least expensive item on the menu, you can do a good texture with in a day or two, weapon and character, texture mapping, and such takes a while...90% of textures are stock photo's ;)

In actual fact you will still get 128k and 256k, textures in games, simply because there is still use for them, in particularly small objects, it will be particularly retarded, to apply a 4048k x 4048k texture to a coke can, level geometry seldom use textures higher than 1024 x 1024, there is no need to use higher res textures, it will not make the object any prettier, textures resolutions scale proportional to object size, complexity, tiling ect, so wasting high res textures on small objects, or objects which is barely visible to the player, other than being stupid, waste GPU memory.

it seems to me, without being rude you have a very limited understanding of game development in general, it is probably frustrating, when I say some thing contrary to what you are saying ;)

If you told me that was a BF3 SP dlc I would believe you. Really not seeing that much in detail upgrade. Hope the new MP gameplay will make it worth it.

Unlike you I can own up to being rude and let me be frank and say that you being rude and acting like an arrogant know-it-all.

I didn't at any point argue against you or tried to make this personal and I apologize if you see it that way. I merely pointed out my view on the subject matter as we are all entitled to do. In fact I even agreed with you to some extent and I stated in my previous post that I'm not 100% correct as I can't be bothered to research thousands of cases in order to be perfectly correct and win internetz points regarding this matter.

Call agent Mulder! You must be a telepathic being. How do you know what's inside my mind?

Let me tell you. I'm not the fool you take me to be. A large part of my degree was in computer graphics and I'm currently developing a game in my spare time. A new engine, physics, textures, you name it. I'm creating everything from scratch. I'm far from being an expert but I have some first hand experience in this. I can assure you that creating a quality 4k texture from scratch takes a hell of a lot more time and effort than slapping a 128 photo onto a coke can.

I know you are not a idiot and I will treat you as such, I would appreciate it if you would act in kind, but you seem to be unable to. So let me put it to you straight. The only thing I find frustrating is when a person like you who could do better is acting like an ignorant and arrogant **** who thinks he knows everything and everyone. The world is already full of them and you're not wanted. Please feel free to reply once you've regained some dignity and some form of respect for people.

Actually bud just want to point out that I have been doing game development for over 12 years ;). So if I come across as being rude, then sorry the fact that I have created and textured easily over 25k models and meshes, and worked on paid for projects and have for a few months been freelancing for a UK game development company, written several development guides, it may seem that I am a arrogant know it all prick, unfortunately, you view was incorrect, and I want to kindly point that out.

So take it as you want, you have some inaccuracies in your view ;) More than happy to discuss the game development with you at length ;) I don't want to come across as being the ass, but I also want to assist and explain that your were wrong, without sounding like a rude ass :)

I have created a map based on stock photo's only, and you wouldn't know the difference, have a video of that I will gladly email it to you ;)

Took you up on your offer and sent you a PM. I'm not going to derail this thread any further.

Looks like a recycled BF3. Nothing impressive to see here

LOL. This thread is exactly why the vast majority of feedback from gamers on forums goes ignored by publishers/developers. The numbers do not align themselves with the opinions expressed by the "hardcore gaming crowd". If the current gaming models are making money, then there are people who are clearly benefiting from these systems and liking them. Keyboard Rambos and and the like rarely have any useful information or insight into their so called passion regarding the gaming industry.

Either way this game looks incredible, Frostbite 2.5 or 3.0 makes zero difference. you're not owed the naming rights to an IP by DICE or EA, as long as it does what it's supposed to. From the 17min it looks damn good. Better artistically/ Aesthetically than what I've seen from CryEngine 3 and I thought that was incredible (still do). I'm also however not saying it's better technically as there's no way anyone can make that argument objectively.
Game looks great in single-player (which is all I'm concerned with personally), I will buy this because I'm impressed by what I've seen so far.
It's just a game, EA isn't offering to save humanity from disease of any kind, but it, don't buy whatever.

Finally a voice of reason, would it make a difference if they called it FrostByte 76? Nope. Arguing about the numbering system they choose to use for THEIR OWN product is stupid.
