Description of Bad Deal: faulty GPU

So I just sold my RTX 2070s hoping to get something a bit better, about a week ago I saw someone listing a couple of RTX 3060 TIs for very good price and jumped right for it, messaged the seller and he responded. He was very quick to answer any questions I had about the GPU, I asked him how many models he had, their conditions and he was happy to tell me all about it. So I ask him to run a benchmark on one of the palit model and (HE SAID HIS MOTHERBOARD WAS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE CARD AND HE CAN ONLY RUN THE GPU ON A RISER AND ALSO SOME CARDS DON'T WORK WITH SOME MOTHERBOARDS) now if you're confused by this your not alone.

Then we continued with the deal and I settle on a palit model, he showed it to me working I paid him he shipped to me last Sunday but was told it will pickup by the courier on Monday he sent me a waybill no problem.

Then it arrived on Friday I picked it up, get home unboxed it, in to my PC then nothing, no display. I thought the was something wrong with my system, I swapped ram slots, used a single ram stick, pulled my motherboard out the case thinking the might be a sort on my system but still nothing, and then contacted the seller his response was maybe your system is not compatible with the GPU. Now I'm not PC expert but I've never heard of that before, so he recommended I talk to a guy who he said is a PC expert so I said sure I'll talk him he gave me all sorts of advice I tried them all still nothing.

After many hours of trying, it displayed for the first time I then tried to change some settings in the bios then it just shut off the display and it was died, it only worked for 10 minutes. I contacted the seller again telling him that it worked but died shortly after his response - what did you do to it? I told him that I was only plugging it in to my PC nothing more, I concluded by telling him I'll try the card at my friend's PC that will tell us what's the problem.

Next day my friend picked me up along with my pc to his house for testing and as I feared it was the GPU, now he claims that I did something to the GPU, his also refusing to refund me and he also claims he has a witness who saw the GPU working so I should wait for Monday. So that's my struggle so far, I'd appreciate to hear your thoughts on this matter.

This makes no sense at all. How can it not work on a particular motherboard?
The only way it couldn't work on a motherboard is if it doesn't have full sized pci-e slots.
Don't all the mining boards have at least 1 full sized slot?

I don't get it too, apparently his IT guy told him that's how it works and to make matters worse he sold some GPUs that he claims had the same compatibility issue, I feel sorry for those poor unsuspecting customers๐Ÿ˜ฅ

If I can add my 2 cents here. I once sold a amd GPU here that only worked on my motherboard, grey screened on the buyers system when he wanted to game. We tested the GPU on my system again, no issues. I immediately agreed on a refund, no questions asked. The buyer back then wanted to figure out why it only worked on my system. A couple of tests and a month or two later, neither he or myself had a explanation. But yeah, it's possible in my opinion that x GPU can only work on x board. But these scenarios are rare I guess.

I wonder is these guys have their wires crossed?

When Nvidia introduced the LHR cards miners were trying to figure out ways around it. One of the ways to unlock a 3060ti LHR to its full potential was to use it with a 16X riser and then use a dummy plug in the HDMI port. So this is where the compatible motherboard part comes in. You had to use a Motherboard with full length PCI slots and a 16Xriser. At the time this was the only way to get them to mine at decent hash rates.

Perhaps this is where you being told its not compatible with a certain motherboard? However this is from a mining perspective and should have no affect on the card when used as intended to.

In a normal setup and being used for gaming the card must work entirely as intended to. If not it is then faulty. It is that simple.

Update
So the seller refused to refund me still sticking to his baseless story of I did something to the card in the end @JMangoes27 bought the card from me so now I'm saving up for a new card, surprisingly @JMangoes27 bought a couple of card from the same guy but he says all his cards worked, I guess that's my rotten luck for you๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Thanks for the update, please give the seller a rating that you feel he deserves based on your experience with the deal.
