The reviews of these seem to have consensus in that the m40x performs 10x better. How do you experience their quality?

I just have to chime in having used lots of audio gear. The M40x and M50x honestly don't sound as different as many reviewers make it out to be. The M40x feels a little more relaxed, while the M50x has a stronger feel. Both are a good entry into a better audio game :)

I agree. I tested both the m40x (which I own) and the m50x headset on my phone, laptop, and hi-fi.
The m40x sounded a bit better on my laptop and phone, but the m50x did sound alot better when connected to my hi-fi.
So perhaps if you have a stronger/better dac then the m50x would be better.
At least that's my opinion of it.
GLWS OP.
