Hi folks, I need some advice.

The missus is a pc novice, and as such things like "regular backups" are becoming a bit of an issue. Last night her Dell laptop died, and suffice to say, she had no recent backups.

Now I managed to recover her data, cause the hdd was fine, but still made me think I better setup a solution before the next problem.

What I have --- Uncapped dsl, WIFI router, 3tb western digital green drive

What I need --- a setup where her laptop would basically backup all her documents and files, that have changed, every night / other night only while on WIFI to a local backup drive

Questions:
1) What else do I need
2) Whats the cheapest / simplest way to do this?
3) I'd like to avoid online backups if possible, but if not then would need some form of secure online backup after midnight before 6am.

Any advice would be appreciated

Regards

A nas would be best, other than that a pc/microserver to connect the external to, which must also be connected to the WiFi

Try CrashPlan for a backup solution. The free service allows backups every 24hrs and you are allowed recovery of files with versioning by day/week/month and even year.
Started using it recently and you even get reports on how well the backup is running or if the backup have not been done over a certain period of time via email. I'm using it on two laptops one with about 150GB of music/pictures and files and the other mainly documents. Working like a charm!

You don't need to use the online backup, you simply setup Crashplan on a pc/server and on the client choose to backup too it.

PS. Files can be encrypted on the backups to secure the information. Recovery is easy via the client application.
