Hi everyone,

I'm trying to see if anyone here is using a 4K TV as a computer monitor here - and, if so - are you able to get subsampling 4:4:4 on it @ 60Hz?

If you're not using at least HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 - your answer is no :)

Please share model numbers - I'm trying to source on in SA.

Cheers,
D

What size are you looking at? There is a 40inch 4K monitor available in SA. It's priced very well, however, it's like a hit and miss. Some people have issues some don't. I was lucky, mine works brilliantly and no issues at all.

40" is what I'm after, still has decent pixel density at that size

I was also thinking about this recently. Only problem was, my GPU doesn't have HDMI 2.0, and finding a display port TV is not that easy locally.

A 40" 4K panel has higher pixel density than a 21" 1080p display(probably the same as a 20"), and you will probably be sitting further away from it. So you should be good.

I'm using a 49" LG. 49UF68
Port 1 is HDMI 2.0, connected to a MDP 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 adapter. Got both the HDMI 2.0 cable and MDP adapter on Amazon.

Getting my full 60Hz after some tweaking with SwitchRezX.

Yeah I am too, but not chroma 4:4:4 - can you check that torture image and see if you can read all lines clearly? (share pic of possible)

+1, I'm also shopping for a 40" to use as my gaming monitor.

I don't play competitive FPS and as long as I have >40fps @ 60hz I can't be happier - so seems like better value than paying 12k plus for a monitor right.

Anyway, I came across this page which seems to have some decent data

The LG EG 9600 seems like the way to go - but 55" won't work.
So the next best going for a 40" looks like the samsung JU 7500 - but I'm a bit concerned over the response time.

I use a Samsung 50 inch JS7200, the JU6500 also works. Basically all J series Samsungs. The only issue with Chroma is that you have to switch it into pc mode which sacrifices a lot of eye candy. So I rather go 4:2:2 with UHD color on, looks amazing and for some reason red text etc still looks great

What do you mean by losing eye candy? Surely Chroma 4:4:4 would be sharper ?

Dynamic Contrast, Black levels, those things looks much worse and the sharpness does not compensate for that. Running a Samsung Tele in 4k makes it look like a Hisense, takes away all the processing and gimmicks that makes a Samsung stand out. A Samsung tele is only rivaled by the LG OLED tvs, check rtings.com for scores to get an idea

OK, but you CAN actually do 4:4:4 @ 60Hz on this screen ? Could you perhaps do a me a favour and try that torture test at 4:4:4 on your screen?

I've done the test can guarantee you that it works, it's what the UHD color option is for. Will take a pic for you tonight when I get off work, I was in the same boat as you but I wanted a 50'' from the get go since I use my tv for console gaming as well. Had to import a hdmi 2.0 cable from Amazon just to get 4k to run @ 60hz. But that was last year when HDMI 2 cables were almost none existent in our country

Cool man thanks, just wanna be sure before I spend a fair amount of cash :)

If you do decide on one, let me know how it goes for you. I have the Samsung HU7000 (got it for R8k on a takealot special) and while its decent, and I use it, I really want chroma 4:4:4 for my photo editing.

Sorry, forgot/missed this thread somehow.

Pic opens top left corner in browser and full screen in OSX Preview. Images of both attached. Much clearer in real life though.

this looks like 4:2:2 IMO - still good - I ended up going with the Samsung SUHD which can do 8bit 4:4:4 @ 60hz (confirmed) - also 10 bit color but not 4:4:4 @ 60hz

I'm also looking for a 40" UHD TV to use as a monitor, but it seems like there are no options locally
