I am so confused about what to upgrade my gtx 1080 into, I am looking at buying a 1440p 165hz monitor(LG Ultragear 32 inch) and I could really use some advice, If I get the 30xx it will be second hand from Carb with probably about 6 months left on warranty, where the 4060 will have 3 years, On fps it looks like the 3070 kills all 3 but as soon as frame generation comes into play its a non starter, the 4060 destroys everything else,

The prices that I have been seeing is about
R5500 - 3060ti (used 6 months warranty)
R6500 - 3070 (used 6 months warranty)
R6800 - 4060 (new)

I also haven't bought the monitor yet, so if anyone has other suggestions than the LG, let me know

Some advise would be much appreciated

I tend to favour the card with the highest raw horsepower.

The 4060 with frame gen is fastest, but not that many games support frame gen yet. 3070 with DLSS 2.0 is your best option in my opinion, though I'd also look at AMD options.

I would ignore frame generation for now as A) it seems to require a high fps to work well which becomes a "win more" card (a term taken from MTG card game), i.e. it only works well when you're already doing well, so this just effectively adds sprinkles on the icing, and B) I think it's a total gimmick.

4060 ti 8gb = 3060 ti

3070 is about 10% faster on average than the 3060ti, so adjust for 10% more cost to keep it a 1:1 ratio.
The only card maybe worthwhile in the mid range from nvidia is the 4060ti 16gb purely for ai related tasks like generating ai art or machine learning. Out of the three you mentioned, the 3070 would be the best, but given that budget range you would probably be better served by a 6700/6750 (xt) from amd if you do not need any nvidia specific features.

Why not wait till next year, when hopefully better cards get released? The cpu and gpu releases was underwhelming this year.

I see that LG Ultragear is R6500 at Evetech, which is probably what you're looking at, and that is not a bad price for it. Not going to find a decent QHD at that price anywhere else really. So hard to recommend anything other than that.

Clearly, warranty is a thing for you, otherwise you would not have bought it up. So you're probably already leaning towards buying new.

Just to keep in mind. I was gaming on a 2070S at 1440p at around high setting until a month ago when I did an upgrade, and I never really had any issues. So I think a 3070 should be fine. If you can find one that is well looked after, you shouldn't have to worry too much about warranties. Just know that you're never going to hit that 165 fps of the monitor.

Personally, I'll go for a 70 class card from last gen over a 60 class card of the current gen every day of the week.

Most recent rumours have the RTX 5000-series only releasing in 2025. There might be a few interim releases before then (rumours of Ti cards as well) but there is no guarantee they won't be just as underwhelming.

I'd add to what others are saying, ignore frame generation when considering which GPU to buy. It also adds input latency (or rather, runs at the input latency of the native frame rate), so if you're playing any sort of FPS game, frame gen adds no benefit at all.

I'd also strongly look at the AMD cards in the same price range that might have slightly lower performance but more VRAM. 8GB on a 3070 is going to start being a limitation at 1440p in the not-too-distant future, I predict.

Already is, I noticed it in a few games when I had mine. If I was buying now, it would be 10GB or more, ideally 12/16.

Thanks for the responses, so from a bit of research, the options are now

3070 - second hand with about 8 months of warranty +-R6k
4060ti - new R6800
3070ti - second hand if I can get one for about 6500-6800 with a bit of warranty left - would be nr1 option
RX6700 - new R6500 (haven't looked to much into second hand yet and I don't really know the current AMD line up very well)

With me mentioning the warranty, I only need like a 6 month to see that the card is 100%, my wife will never let me hear the end of it if i buy a card and it breaks 3 months later.

I will also be needing a new power supply for this as I only have a 500watt, I have gotten strong opinions on not buy a second hand one because if all the loadshedding etc,

Also regarding waiting till next year, I have no faith next year will be less disappointing than this gen so might aswell take the plunge now and buy again with the 60xx

Are you adamant on sticking to Nvidia? Because you may be able to find a Radeon 6800 going for around R6500 on carbonite. That card beats the 3070 TI quite consistently in raw performance and has 16gb of vram, which in theory could be important for modern games running at 1440p (Hogwarts legacy for example, recommends 12gb of vram at 1440p)

I would happily go AMD , My 1080 is actually my first Nvidia card, before that it was all amd. I just don't know anything about the current line up, Ill do some research and check carbonite for prices.

Also There is a 3070ti which has about a year of warranty left and is in my budget, I am leaning towards this currently because it still has a warranty and the 6800's i am seeing on carb are all R8k except for one without warranty.

If that's the case, going with a second had 6800 or even 6800XT as @Criiies suggested might not be a bad option.

I can't see any RX6800 in my budget, the only 1 is at my max, with no warranty and the user has 0 anything on Carbonite, the rest only start at R7700 and my Max is R6800

You might be looking at the 6800 xt instead of the 6800, but its true that there arent many for sale right now.
