A little background
After most of my i7-4790X gaming rig was stolen (some things were too big to carry out) in late 2018, I sold off the remaining parts and bought this little beast through Mustek Durban (my employer's tech supplier). This allowed me to still play the games I enjoyed, while being able to pack up my gaming rig and keep it in-sight whenever I was not at home... Now, since I've managed to rectify my home security issues, I want to make the move back to a desktop gaming rig.
What I currently have
It got the 32GB RAM upgrade at purchase, and it currently has a 256GB NVMe and a 500GB SSD (will confirm makes and models this evening). The keyboard is in perfect condition, all lights fully functional and no funky keys.. I literally never get unintentional double-strokes or missed key presses, and I use this thing quite regularly for gaming and software development (square brackets normally die first, these are still flawless).
There are no scratches on the screen, save for the subtle key cap marks that happen on every laptop ever... These do buff out with a microfibre cloth and lense cleaning solution though, I just haven't done it in a while. Screen hinges are also still in good condition, and I notice no more "wobble" than it had brand new.
The battery hasn't had many "charge cycles", since the laptop has been used on mains power for most of it's life and then on pure sine wave inverter for the last year-odd. I am very keen to run the battery test and see the real-world numbers, so I will do sowhen I get home this evening and update this post.
The laptop also came with a MSI backpack style laptop bag, tons of padding and a decent number of pockets (but TBH, I wouldn't have bought this bag if I had a choice, it's good, but it's not great).
What I want (what I really really want...)
I'm looking to swap for a desktop gaming rig tower... I do not need any peripherals, as I am happy with my current keyboard/mouse/dual 24" curved desk setup (yes, I run 5760x1080 on this laptop with dual external monitors).
Naturally, I would like a newer generation CPU, but that's not required.. I'll put my viable trade options as matching the following requirements:
I am open to the idea of switching to AMD and/or ATI, but having been out of the custom PC building scene for a number of years, please do allow me some time to research potential trade offers..
So, wonderful people of Carbonite... A few questions for you:

System specs:
- Intel i7 8750H @ 2.20GHz
- 2x 16GB DDR4-2400
- NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 (GP106) with 6GB GDDR5
- 1x 256GB Kingston NVMe SSD (current C
- 1x 512GB HP EX950 SSD
PLEASE TAKE NOTE: while I was checking these specs, I noticed HWMonitor showing me uncomfortably high CPU core temps, so I need to redo heatsink thermal paste before I do anything else with this machine... Also, while it's not bad for a 4-year old battery, it is a 4-year old battery... so I would like to find investigate replacing that first.
With all that said, I will keep this "feeler" thread open, and will leave update messages here as I make progress on the aforemention mmaintenance..

Naturally, I would like a newer generation CPU, but that's not required.. I'll put my viable trade options as matching the following requirements:
- Minimum 8th-gen i7 (willing to consider 10th-gen and newer i5)
- Minimum 32GB RAM (might consider 16GB, if CPU/GPU are tasty enough)
- Maximum 750W PSU (because, well, Eskom...)
- Minimum GTX 1060 (because I know it "Just Works")
I am open to the idea of switching to AMD and/or ATI, but having been out of the custom PC building scene for a number of years, please do allow me some time to research potential trade offers..
So, wonderful people of Carbonite... A few questions for you:
- Is R20k a reasonabale value to work on here...?
- Does anybody actually ever game on battery power with this "portable beasts"...?
- What desktop rig options you got for me..?
