I have to replace a CPU (Intel i5 6600) and saw a few people recommended the Ryzen 5 3600. While looking around at prices, I noticed that there was a rather large price difference between this and the Ryzen 5 1600. That price difference comes to about 70% more expensive. So my question is two-fold: First, is the 3600 70% better than the 1600 and second, coming from an i5 6600, will I notice a decrease in performance with 1600? I accept that I will notice an increase with the 3600, but I was fairly happy with the performance before.

Any advice will be appreciated.

[UPDATE] Most pertinent question: will I see a performance hit from my 6600 if I go to a Ryzen 5 1600?

i might be wrong here4 but this is as i have it...
upgrading to the 1600 from the 6600 will not help you much in terms of gaming and general stuff on the pc, but for video and other edditing you should see some improvements due to the more cores, but personally wouldnt make that jump as you have to change everything (okay not everything but new mobo and depending on your ram you might have to also replace as amd loves faster ram)

but you could do the jump buy the mobo you want as stick wit hthe cheaper 1600 for now and upgrade the cpu later once prices come down...but the 3600 would definitly be worth the upgrade but dont expect to see 70% improvements over your 6600

Thanks Solz. Appreciate the response.

So I really did mean that I have to replace the CPU. Well, actually the motherboard is dead and instead of replacing it with an old motherboard, I figured let's going for something newer. I have preferred AMD all my life, but I had to buy during the Bulldozer era and so opted for intel instead. Those were dark times. So I am going back to AM4. I still have my DDR4 RAM (even though it's 2100MHz) and will stick with that. I'm not expecting a 70% increase over my 6600. I am wondering whether the 3600 is 70% better than the 1600 - which I already know in my gut it's not. So paying that 70% higher prices just hurts.

So let's rephrase: will I see a performance hit from my 6600 if I go to a Ryzen 5 1600? [updating original thread]

Think as it goes will be a see s as an upgrade upgrade and should give a boost in performance, but should also end up lasting longer seeing its got two more cores.

So if your mobo is done for it makes sense to use the time to switch teams and get some performance upgraded also, but would definitely recommend changing that ram to atleast 3200

just from a RAM compatibility and IPC gain, the AMD 3600 is far better. Not 70% better but still better.

that being said, the AMD 1600AF is a very good option. Pair it with a B450 motherboard and it would be a great pairing.

In your case, I’d stick to Micron Rev E RAM as it it’s very cheap and very easily overclocked.
