It's the width of the card. Most GPUs are pretty wide, which requires you to not just remove the PCI backplate from the slot used, but also 1 slot next to it, i.e, 2 slots. That additional slot is usually used for the GPU's exhaust.

Ya I'm pretty sure most of those cards dual slot and some will be 2.5 or 3 slot.
