The setup: xiaomi mesh system with the following devices connected
Cellphone connected via 5ghz
Desktop connected via lan
Laptop connected via 5ghz (asus m513ua)

Cellphone and desktop both working fine, I'm typing this on the desktop. On the laptop it is connected to the network but no internet access. Laptop has an ip address, but I cannot access the router on it. I can access the router from both cellphone and desktop.
Switched laptop from 5ghz to 2.4ghz, still the same. Deleted and reconnected to both networks, still the same. Did a bios update (didnt expect this to fix it but found update so installed it anyway), still the same.
In the router settings I can see the laptop connected with the same ip address that appears on the laptop, it has internet access same as other devices which I then toggle off and on again. No change.
On the cellphone, which is connected to the same network, I created a 5ghz hotspot which I connected to on the laptop and now it has internet access. Speeds are great and all works fine. Disconnect and connect again to the router 5ghz and no internet access.
The laptop has been working perfectly fine on the same network for over a year, no windows updates or anything done recently. I was watching netflix on it last night.

My question is: wtf?

I had something similar where a specific device was connected but would not get any internet although a difference between your scenario above and mine is that I had multiple routers connected to each other.

The issue was that the main routers (the only 1 with wifi enabled) DHCP server was assigning the same IP to 2 separate devices. Check the IP of all the devices connected to see if there is any duplication.

No duplication, even switched on 2 more devices and nothing has the same ip as the laptop. On the laptop ping to the default gateway fails

I had a similar issue with my phone when I switched the IPV6 option on. The other time it was the encryption, it did not like wpa3.

I know these are basic, but sometimes the small things mess us around.

Good luck bud.

basic to you but foreign to me :)
what should I do to check this?

Old school approach. Do a Malwarebytes scan. Might be difficult since you have no connection though.

Make sure the Gateway on the Laptop WiFi adapter actually reflects the correct Gateway address. It should be the IP of the Router generally speaking.

CMD prompt as Admin, enter these commands and Enter after each command.

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release

Reboot Laptop.

You still haven't fixed it though. You've assigned a DHCP leased IP as a static IP. If the lease period expires, then the IP might change, which leaves you where you were.

Do a complete Network reset as I explained earlier. IPV6 can stay off. It's not required.
He'll get this message hopefully tomorrow morning. Too busy on the hub now.

Followed steps in elevated cmd, restarted, back to no internet. Now I dont have an ip address

SpaceWalker

nevermind I had to switch back to auto dhcp dns and its working again
Cool. So Network reset did it.
My last advice. Do a quick Google of each command I gave. Read what it does. Should take less than 5 minutes and stays with you forever

So months later this issue has popped up again, and I followed the same steps as before but I'm not winning, anyone has any advice on what to do?

TLDR:
-Laptop connected to mesh network but no internet access
-All other devices in home have internet access
-Laptop can connect just fine to other network and has internet access
-Usb wifi dongle on laptop connects to mesh network and has internet access

What I have done:
-netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /release
-reset router
-check devices connected to router, laptop shows up and there is no ip address conflict
-windows network reset
-drivers installed
-network adapter disabled/enabled
-manually assign ip address
-windows reset, yes I sacrificed everything and went this far

I can eliminate the nic being faulty by the fact that it works fine with other networks.
I'm going to assume the router is fine because 5 other devices are connected and working fine, its just something with this 1 laptop settings. 1 thing to note is that after resetting the router the laptop connects and it has internet access for about a minute and then its gone, during this time that it has access it is connected to the main mesh node (which is further away), once it connects to the usual node close by is when access disappears. The 5 other devices are connected to this same node
