Car oil: the brands on sale

So a bit of a necro but I’ve stuck to the Liqui Moly for two services now and it has improved my engine to some degree.

The hydro lifts/tappets are much more quiet and it runs better overall. It accelerates better and the engine is smoother.

I notice very little sludge with each oil change compared to the Magnetec which is great to see.

I can’t tell you you won’t get the same result from a fully synthetic oil from another brand but I’m a huge fan of Liqui Moly.

I have done my service on my kia picanto 1.2 and the oil used was the Shell helix hx7 10w 40 and I must say I can feel a big difference between what Kia used. I have no idea what brand they used but it was the 5w 30 and the car always felt a bit sluggish but with the hx7 it does not even feel sluggish anymore and it is smoother as well.

Your engine uses shim buckets :) If you have a valve train noise on that engine then it is time to reset the cam gear backlash :)
Ive used a few 1000L of shell and I will keep on doing it :D
Shell HX3 for older engines does wonders!

Shell keeps your piston oil control rings nice and clean.
But still the best oil is to service your car regularly.

Have run mutol in all my bikes for years, but running Liqui Moly in my Subaru. Both these oils come at a premium but haven't had any bad experiences with them.
I just buy my Liqui Moly from the Subaru dealer near my house, when I bought earlier this year it was R576 for the high tech 5w40 I run in my car. I do however service my car twice during a single service interval (so every 6250km compared to the stock 12500km intervals), so around twice a year at the current rate without extended holiday drives.

Cool, my car needs 8.2l of oil per oil change but this oil is rated as per the correct VW/Audi spec...
Pro tip - buy oil from Mercedes. They sell Group IV oil (Fully synthetic, PAO derived oil) for the takealot price. You must just yourself figure out what Merc equivalent spec matches the VAG spec...

In Germany, full synthetic oil still means it is fully synthetic - synthesized oil. In other countries, hydrocracked mineral oil can also be called full synthetic - but in Germany it is "synthetic technology". It is one of my pet peeves, not that it makes that much of a difference in real life.

Which other oils gave you looked at? The VW/Audi spec has increased and some oils exceed the previous requirements.

If this oil does meet your requirements at a good price, that’s great. I’d also like an oil made for cars that sit in -40 degree C weather too. It should offer great cold start protection.

The Shell Helix I looked at is 117 a litre and Castrol Edge is R134 a litre...

Hmmm. My only problem with those prices is that my ultra expensive Liqui Moly is ~R130 a litre and superior for engines that use multi valve technology.

Where did you get your pricing? Are Helix and Edge R500+? Call up GoldWagon for pricing. Midas was hellishly expensive.

Both Helix and Ultra are great oils, by all means, but they are general oils.

Edit: Makro sells Edge at R105 a litre. That’s R840 to fill your car plus one litre for top ups.

Where are you looking?

To be honest only went to Midas and Autozone... That Takealot oil is not the right one for my car it needs the more expensive one.. or MB229.51 which I will look into tomorrow.

Call GoldWagon - much cheaper and a better selection.

Mercedes comes out of the factory with Shell Helix.

Yup. Most car manufacturers just buy oil, spark plugs, shocks, etc from other manufacturers and then just rebrand them but charge 4 times as much.

I know because my buddy knows everything about the BMW E46 range and can tell you which oil they use, from whom and how you can save a fortune but get OEM quality items.

The worst manufacturer of cars is Chev. All of their cars are made in Asia, on a tight budget and accountants decide what goes into the final retail car. Just look at the badge location on some of their models - it was placed in a completely stupid location because a non car enthusiast did it.

The Chev Lumina is actually a great car but that’s because it was designed by Australians and made with Petrol-heads in mind. Amazing car. Do want the 6.2 SS model.
