Hi guys
I only have myself to blame, of course, so not asking for any sympathy. Never having had a bad experience on Carbonite I have become too trusting for my own good. I was scammed, or more accurately, exploited for my stupidity by the same person mentioned in three of the most recent threads here already. His username is OVERLoRDD and his 'real' name he gave as Rian Brad Havenga. I really wish I read the bad deals section more often, as he was described so accurately in this thread: http://carbonite.co.za/f23/scammer-note-warning-140543/
I am going to post some details here so that this man can be easily identified, for in case he is still hiding around in the Carbonite vents, waiting to pounce once again. He can change his name, his numbers, his background story, but his voice and behaviour will be the same.
TLDR:
His phone numbers are: +27 60 383 0270 and +27 78 906 6071
He claims to be from Bloemfontein (or maybe some other far-away place)
He claims to be a student studying IT
He claims to work in a hardware repair workshop.
He is 1st language Afrikaans, has a deepish, stuttering voice and speaks really quickly, not sounding very articulate, almost like his brain can't keep up with his mouth - I have voiceclips of him if anyone is interested.
He uses the words "bud", "tjom" & "my vriend" a lot.
He mentions his dead father turning around in his grave a lot
He makes religious blessings, like "may God walk alongside you my friend!"
He exhibits rather sociopathic behaviour, definitely not just an ordinary opportunist.

Thursday night:
1 - I posted a wanted thread asking for 2 x 8gb ram dimms.
2 - OVERLoRRD contacts me via private message claiming to have 2 corsair DDR3 1333 dims. He has a feedback score of zero, but nevertheless I thought I might as well hear him out as we all started with 0 score. He asks that we talk over whatsapp. He sends me a photo of his 2 x dimms. I couldn't find the same photo on google images. The number he uses is +27 60 383 0270. He claims to live in Bloemfontein, so meeting up will be impossible.
3 - He pretends to be a young student, working part time in an IT workshop. He is very friendly and chatty. He offers to sell the ram for R400 per dimm. And offers to throw in 2 x ddr2 dimms for free.
4 - He says he may have more 8gb dimms in the workshop. I tell him to check for me Friday and let me know. Maybe I will take it.
5 - He asks if it will be possible for us to finish everything before the weekend, as he is a student and would like some cash for the weekend. I don't make any promises. We end the conversation.
6 - He ends the conversation by blessing me in the name of God. I thought it was strange but since his profile says he is only 19, I thought maybe he was just trying too hard to make a good impression.
Friday
5 - around 13:30 he gets back to me to say that he did indeed find more ram.
*at this stage I thought the R800 for the ram might be worth the risk, as that amount won't bankrupt me if I indeed lost it somehow. But things started snowballing a bit from here on:
6 - I make the mistake of asking him if he has any other useful things in the workshop, like cpus.
7 - He says that he does have more stuff. From this point on he sends regular voice recordings, and he has a very stuttery, quick way of speaking, like his brain can't keep up with his mouth. His voice is deep-ish. He changes phones, sending me a whatsapp from a different phone, number +27 78 906 6071, claiming that his phone has a software problem and that he needs to use the office phone. He regularly tells me that a client has just walked in and so he is away from the phone gone for long periods on end. He really did manage to make me believe he was busy in a workshop, serving clients.
8 - He gives me a list of the cpus he's got. He mentions some lga 775 dual cores, a 2500k and a non-k and k version of the 3770.
9 - At this point CUD starts clouding my judgement. I've also never had a shady deal so I have become less and less vigilant. I decide I might as well go for the 15-2500k as well, since I need to build my father a new pc to replace his old pentium 4. OVERLoRRD offers to sell the 2500k for R800, which is quite low, but since I've seen 2600ks going for R1100 or so I thought R800 is probably within reason.
10 - We debate about the account to use for the payment. He has a capitec but I am at Absa. He asks if I could pay into his fiance's absa account, but later says we will have to use the capitec. He offers to subtract R50 from the price to make up for bank charges so I can do an immediate payment.
11 - we agree that I will take the 2 x ram sticks, the 2500k and pay for shipping. He says he could ask the store manager for some discount.
11B - I mention that I mightsell one of my 2600ks. He offers to subtract R1000 off my total for the cpu, ram and shipping if I send him the cpu back with the courier. This part I still don't really understand, why would he make such an offer? I declined, saying I'm still using it and won't have time to remove it until next week. I wish I wen't with the offer though, as I would then have lost less than R1000 to this charlatan XD
12 - He offers to contact CourierIT to work out the price. He gets back to me with the shipping cost and the total cost, minus the R50.
13 - In spite of the danger, (I might not be valuing money as much as I should because of how little expenses I have) I agree to pay.
14 - I send him the proof of payment and he thanks me, telling me to enjoy the hardware. He goes silent before I could ask about the couriers.
Friday night (this is where it becomes silly)
15 - very late, around 10:30, he is on whatsapp again, strangely using the office phone.
16 - I ask about the courier. He tells me his phone is at 1% battery life and that I must wait about 10 minutes.
17 - An hour later he gets back to me, telling me his car charger fails to charge his phone.
18 - He tells me he needs a favour, that his car (a Polo) has just broken down and he needs me to give him money so he can pay the towing vehicle, as he only has R280 cash on him and the tow guy wants R750.
19 - At this point I immediately kick myself knowing I have been scammed.
20 - OVERLoRRD hilariously tries to manipulate me sending me voice recordings of him panicking. He claims to have the office's expensive 34" monitor in his car that people might rob him for.
21 - I explain I can't help him and that he should send a photo as proof.
22 - He indignantly asks why I need a photo and then says OK, he will send one but never does.
23 - I tell him to put himself in my shoes, that there is no reason for me to believe him. He becomes indignant but later apologises, saying it was wrong to ask me to help him. He then says his father is dead and none of his 'friends' are interested in helping him. He tries to butter me up, telling me that he likes me and that we are very similar, he can relate to me, etc. hence why he is asking me for help.
24 - He apologizes again and bids me a good night. Immediately afterwards he writes "No, shit!" Heeelp!" Getting pretty sociopathic.
25 - I refuse to help. An hour later he texts me again saying he is still on the side of the road and asks me to consider helping by transferring him money.
26 - I confess that I'm doubting whether there really is a package being shipped my way. He gets very indignant, swearing high and low that he did ship and that God would never forgive him and that his father would turn over in his grave if he scams someone. He says that I need to apologize to him in the morning when I get my stuff. I ask him about the couriers, if there is a waybill or reference number but he evades the question, again saying how he can't believe that I am suspecting him of lying - trying to play on my conscience. He gets angry that I am wasting his time, "keeping him company while he is standing on the side of the road".
27 - He claims to be struggling with cash as he is a student and recently needed to make a payment to UNISA. He claims he is third year BSc Information Technology, but his profile says he is 19, so the former fact can't be possible.
28 - I again ask him to give me a photo of him next to the road as proof. He says he will, but is reluctant. He makes an excuse that he will need to wait a while for his phone to charge to 10%. 20 minutes later he sends a really dark photo of the car that doesn't really show much. He probably went an parked it in the street outside his driveway XD. He tells me that the phone doesn't have a flash. I still refuse to pay and he goes on about how I shouldn't treat everyone like they are liars.
29 - I ignore him and about half an hour later, around 3:00 a.m. in the morning (Saturday morning), he confesses. He says "let me tell you the truth" and proceeds to tell me that he never shipped the hardware, that it is there with him. He claims that something was wrong with his account and he couldn't pay the couriers. He says the story about him needing help was to extract money from me which he could use to pay the couriers. He says I have a choice, either pay him the extra R500 "tow money" he wants or never get the hardware and lose the money I paid him. He goes silent after that point and hasn't responded since.
30 - no courier arrived today :'(

I have already began hypnotising myself to believe that the money was not lost in a scam, but that I needed to pay for replacing a car component or something, just to make it easier on my conscience . Hopefully this will make me more careful in the future and save me from getting suckered by even bigger scams.
Apparently it is very difficult or impossible even to catch these scammers and going to the police will not help? But if anyone has suggestions please let me know. The money I lost won't bankrupt me at all, but it is not insignificant amount.
