Buying advice: 7 Seater, Everything Vehicle, R400k

Fortuner is a good option if you only want to own the thing for a week.

Went through similar experience in November for the vrou, Drove the MuX and then drove a 2017 Prado afterwards.
We bought the prado (for R500k) as the amount of gadgets and comfort the car has is just fantastic. Desember Holiday got 10L/100km and town driving sitting at 11.5L/100km so happy with that aswell. Service was R2600 at Toyota and did discs and pads all round last month for R 7 500.

Well, that's a good point. It always amazed me how a person looking to buy a Million Rand Car was more concerned about the fuel economy than the safety features.
Well, to be fair, 1 million isn’t really luxury territory these days. It’s around the budget suv range these days.

Not everyone makes a lot of money on the side selling fortune cookies like you do.

Fortuner (if not worried about theft)
Pajero Sport
Mux

Went through the same exercise recently. Big family, like to overland/camp, school trips, shopping trips, etc.
I went with a 2015 Prado VX, but my budget was a bit higher. I had a Fortuner before, sold it for a Jeep Wrangler for fun, then went back to Toyota for practicality (and still some fun). You can find an older, higher mileage Prado in your range (Prado's are not theft risks like the Hilux/Tunas are) if you'd like, but I think if I was you I'd pick up the Pajero Sport.

Thanks everyone for your input! Seriously I've been doing research like crazy now.

It's clearly a Mu-X / Pajero Sport / Fortuner. Of the three I'm leaning towards a Fortuner. But I'm looking at all three with local dealers and seeing which of the three I can get in my budget in the best condition.

Insurance is not really a concern and I'm not too concerned with hijacking / theft where I live and go crime is lower thank usual or gated.

You have 2 outstanding options for this requirement. The Toyota Fortuner and the Mistubishi Pajero Sport, out of those 2 I'd go with the Pajero because it's far more likely to remain where I parked it than a Fortuner.

Another dark horse could be the Mahindra Scorpio N, they seem to have upped their game signifcantly with it. They have always been fairly reliable but always a bit too agricultural, Scropio N is a big step up on the styling and cabin quality also has 5-star NCAP.

One final option to consider is the the Ford Everest, but personally I have seen too many Ford horror stories to be brave enough to drive one.
Looked into the Everest (I like the back two seats fold down and flush) but also have a personal engine trouble story with the Ranger so don't really want to go that route. Looking for more reliability.

If it’s purely for space, convenience and fuel economy, a vw caddy / caddy maxi 7 seater 2.0tdi.

Been driving 1 for about 2 months now and it’s great. Best part is it’s really fuel efficient. With decent mixed driving, I get around 6.2l / 100km.

Probably can’t pull a massive boat but a small one should be fine. There’s also the alltrack version that’s got more power plus dsg.
Looked into the Caddy Maxi (no auto rn and not handle farm roads as well) and the Tiguan Allspace (back seats a bit small compared to other 7 seaters)

Pajero / Pajero Sport would be another good option. Well priced compared to the Toyota.

But, there is one particular vehicle NO ONE has mentioned yet. Ticks all your boxes. Just as reliable as the Toyota (maybe more?) but costs less. Also built on a ladder frame chassis and will tow your house if you need it to.

Isuzu Mu-X.

Fits your budget. 3.0 TDi engine that's more reliable than a hammer. 15 000km service interval. 5 year warranty came standard. Wont cost as much as
Shot for the epic message! I'm currently looking at them.

Fuel economy again anything around 10 l/100km is what I'm expecting from a diesel at this size of car.

I didn't consider the Prado cause of the budget but will definitely look into them. Ik they're solid vehicles.

What do you want from the vehicle? Usage? Kids?

Nissan xtrail accenta 7 seater awd. Seats fold flat.
Thanks will check it out.

It's complete personal bias but for this buy I'm leaning away from German, Chinese and South Korean vehicles for this buy.

Again thanks for everyone input :)

Don't let the odo scare you on a Prado, with proper care you will be able to drive that thing almost forever.

+1 on this.

Side note, service interval is every 10k km ( that I do prefer).
No requirement for a tracker on ours.

One can say Fortune has come my way. We got a Fortuner. No older than 5 years, no more than 100k kms, a smidge over budget, private deal we couldn't pass up.

FYI all Fortuners (2016+), Prados (2018+), Land Cruisers (2017+) and Lexus's (2018+) need dual trackers all older models need one for insurance.

Full comp insurance for me is also only about R1.3k+- depending on who you go with ex tracker fees.

This requirement applies to vehicles that predominantly reside in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

One tracking device, which needs to be either a radio frequency device or an early-warning device, is required for theft and hijacking cover for the following vehicles:
○ Toyota Etios (all models and years)
○ Toyota Hilux (all models manufactured from 2006 to 2015)
○ Toyota Fortuner (all models manufactured from 2006 to 2015)
○ Nissan NP200 (all models and years)
○ VW Polo (all models manufactured from 2010 onward)
○ Ford Ranger (all models manufactured from 2012 onward)

Two tracking devices, with any combination of radio frequency or early-warning are required for theft and hijacking cover for the following vehicles:
○ Toyota Hilux (all models manufactured from 2016 onward)
○ Toyota Fortuner (all models manufactured from 2016 onward)
○ Toyota Prado (all models manufactured from 2018 onward)
○ Toyota Land Cruiser 200 (all models manufactured from 2017 onward)
○ Lexus (all models manufactured from 2018 onward)

Insurance companies want your vehicle to be Fort Knox and your spidey senses never went off when you went to buy it?

I had the VW Tiguan Allspace and I really didn't like it. The third row of seats are not removable and takes A LOT of space (my Jetta had more boot space). Clunky and unpredictable auto stop safety features. Inconsistent DSG gearbox meant that you don't know how long it's going to take to start going when pulling away. Stupid auto tailgate takes ages to open and close and makes a huge noise while doing so. etc, etc, etc. It was a 2020 so maybe the new model is better but at R400000 you might be looking at that one.

@th33machin3
You could also look at the Ford Everest, should fit into your needs quite well.

To OP get the spare wheel antitheft fitted. They steal those wheels often.
Thank you for the recommendation @aiccc and I will be doing so. I've been doing some research know of any good places (or links) I can buy one looking online and found an informative video.

I found this: 4x4store and takealot.

Any recommendations welcome :)

Get the weld on one. It is stronger. Go to a 4x4 shop. Does not take long to do

@StangV2_0 - for vehicle input. Hope you like insurance (fortuner). Like A LOT.
Do you have any idea how many Fortuners are on the road? The chance of being hijacked is a lot lower than you realize. It's the best selling SUV in the market.

For it to get stolen whilst you suip at Hennies or somewhere is a more immediate concern, but fitting a ghost pro works pretty well (costs like R10k)
