Hi Guys,

Trust everyone is doing well in this cold weather :)

I need some advice on a decent Home router in the range of R1 200 to R2 000

What do you use and why?

I currently bought a Tenda TX3 (for the bandwidth control feature for each device) and it feels like not its not a great brand.

What can you guys recommend? Does dual core vs Tri core vs Quad play such a huge role in home networks that just use the router for Internet (Streaming and gaming)

Just router or do you need the wifi too? If just router then I'll whole-heartedly recommend a Ubiquiti USG3.

Tenda isn't the most amazing brand, but the Tenda F3 that Cool Ideas gave me with my fibre contract was bloody amazing. No per-client bandwidth control, but he feature set was otherwise great and the wifi range/performance was way better than I've seen from any other all-in-one box.
I only moved away from it because it only had 100mbit ethernet and N300 wifi.

Aw apologies needs wifi as well :)

I like the tenda as well the interface is easy, but not sure if I am to worry about brand awareness, like these days are TP Link still good

was thinking how does this perfrom compared to a normal wifi router for average home user.

Apologies for jumping on here but I'm also looking to replace my router..
Used the zyxel unit provided by ISP and started giving issues with dropped wi-fi and poor coverage after 2.5years so replaced with the D-Link DWR-956M that I had and it worked fine for like a month but recently started giving issues and keeps needing a restart and also with constant drops and sometimes no connection on 5Ghz (I was next to the router)
Would appreciate any input/suggestions of dual band routers that give good range for multiple devices laptops, phones, tablets, console, tv's and CBI Astutes.

I have a Mikrotik hap ac2 and really happy with it. Wifi range and speed is perfect for our townhouse.

Are they easy to configure?

For a basic setup yes but you can configure it quite a bit, if that is your thing.

I agree. The hap ac2 is a thing of brilliance.

I would just need to setup 2.4ghz and 5ghz WIFI names and thats pretty much it.
I don't think theres anything else really.
Is the basic setup GUI based or do I need to have a WinBox expert on standby?

Also want to jump in here.
Have a 1gbps Vuma Aerial service at my new place.
It uses PPPoE and not the older Vuma ActiveE service.

Now I know that there is an overhead on PPPoE but from all I can find, Mikrotik don't handle so well on this.
So, I need some advice.
Do I drop my HaP Ac3 and get something else or is there not much that will give me better performance.
Don't really want to pay for a 1gbps service and get a depreciated service.

Also have a Deco S4/M4 kit but will only be using that for WiFi asit really doesn't handle PPPoE very well. Don't get much more than 200mbps over the WiFi.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA

Have you managed to come right bud?

Hay @Smurf

So i know my HAP AC3 won't cut it and have been looking at the below Asus router as a friend has a slightly lower spec ROG unit and he is able to get the most out of his router.
Also has a 2.5gbps wan port, should the need and service availability every become available.

Ff you have other suggestions, please do let me know or are you also looking?

There's no way you won't get gigabit with an ac3.

Mikrotik for routing, Unifi for wifi. Mikrotik has a steep learning curve at the start but once you know the basics everything else is super easy to figure out. Ubiquity is very very easy to setup but may require a controller of some sort either barebones (extra cost), cloud (free), or self-hosted (extra setup). I wouldnt pay above R2k for anything else tbh unless its enterprise grade stuff or maybe Cisco

My router, is flippen good, super configurable and just works properly. Wifi range is like, 30m or so in my house, including 5G

While i agree with you unfortunately when doing PPPoE dialling from the Mik the speeds are crap.
They really struggle with encapsulation and decapsulation. I currently have a 1gpbs active-E service form Vumatel and i get 99.5% of my line speed. When i tested my Mik at our new house last week, i was getting around 450-500 on lan.

To give you another example, with my Deco S4 kit i only get around 200mbps on PPPoE but on active-E i get around 900.
It seems stupid but if you look up Mik & PPPoE speeds, you will see that its a shitshow at best.
I love my Mik and its been a good learning curve having to set it up myself but it just isn't going to suit my current requirement.

What size link do you have?
WiFi is not really my issue as we have a TP-Link Deco kit and enough units to cover the house properly.

Cudy, Cudy, Cudy. Easy to setup and great pricing.
Thanks oom. I was looking at a Cudy Mesh kit a while ago but decided to go with the TP-Link, as it just seemed like the better option at the time.

@Smurf
Who is your FNO and do you know if you have a username and password or is it just connect your router and get an IP?

You try changing MTU/MRU?

You have to use FastTrack

@Random_Sheep you need to enable fasttrack for the connections once established.I can't remember exactly what needs to be done but it brings the speeds up substantially. Else you will get kak speeds. I have replaced my internet router with an Untagle firewall (now Arista), but yeah not as cheap as Mikrotik.

I am a bit late but as @Soul Assassin said

Will look into that, will be working at the house this weekend so will take the mik along and see.
Will do some googling now.

Just not to say something incorrect, what do you mean size link?

@Soul Assassin would you mind assisting me in setting it up?
I see its currently enabled on my router but don't know if it would be by default?
I haven't used RouterOS in years, my own MikroTik has OpenWRT on it because I was bored one day.

I doubt it would be on by default, I know with the AC2 you go from ~350 to 920Mbps when you enable it.

There should be an easy enough guide somewhere.

HI Bud, also still looking around.

So currently mine is Vumatel used to be a SaDV network.

I am also looking at that exact same Asus but purely for the "name brand" the Tenda is not bad I love the fact that you limit speed for users xD

Instead of the normal QoS. I think me as a average IT person the Unifiy system is way above my head for a wifi network :) I got the issue of my Phone will just loose Wifi signal but it seems it has to do with DNS settings as I used cloudflare and now using auto settings and has not disconnected yet.

Too answer you I have a username and password. there own router has all this build in stuff but the Huawei router is just not that too be honest feels the wifi is worse on the Huawei
