HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

For the sake of science, let it be known that I'm close to buying the Logitech Pro X headset. I'm currently gaming with an 800S but I am rather keen to compare it's imaging with a gaming headset that I'm hearing good things about ito of positional audio in multiplayer. Best case, I love it and get to confirm that it can give the 800S a run for it's money when it comes to positional audio in-game.. worst case, it's poes kak, but I walk away with a successful experiment that puts my mind at ease, for the relatively low cost of around 500 bucks or so (what I'd lose by selling it so soon).

I got a GSP 600.
Not much of a boost between "Gaming" and HD800.

I'm only interested in positional audio (imaging). I know it's sound quality will be ok for my needs in-game. I have a mate in the UK who bought it over the weekend, coming from an A50, and he loves it. For gaming, the A50 is superb, so that already has my attention. There is not a huge difference between the A50 and high-end audio when you're deep in a 5v5 or 6v6 multiplayer match.

I haven't been on much lately, it seems I missed some stuff. When exactly did the dementia kick in..?
Kind of getting over the hobby now. Endless pursuit of trying new headphones and finding the "best" headphone has made stop enjoying music. There are one or two more headphones I want to try and then call it quits on a pair of electrostatics.

I rate your thread will gather more gaming folk than this one. We slightly got derailed here...

Rule number 1. It's about the music. When it becomes (only) about the gear then you're in danger.

So I finally shelved my G930 and upgraded based on the recommendations I received back in Jan/Feb on this post. I am really impressed with the sound quality, I can't believe it makes such a huge difference.

The mic is not the greatest because it adds a little too much bass but I like a lot. Just have to sort out my cabling mess, so now my @$s is itching for a DAC.

Sigh, you guys let me down the rabbit hole.

Congrats man. The DT990 is a superb choice for gaming... well played.

@capetownwatches
@Scubadude

The Stax SRM-252S amp is rated for 230V@50hz. Box says 50/60hz adapter is rated at 50hz
South Korea's electricity is 220V@60hz
Does this 10V, 10hz difference cause any issues?

As far as I know the slight variation makes no difference at all.
SA mains voltage is the same as Korea at 220V/50Hz but every measurement I've made shows my mains at between 230 and 236V average.
Measurements out of my Furman and Tripp-Lite conditioners show similar, never less than 230V and not close to 220V.

Are you planning on emigrating...?

Leaving next Tuesday.

I think I will be coming back and forth quite often as nothing is confirmed that side yet.
Flying out Tuesday to scope out and get info.
Was planning to use the Deckard money for new audio gd stuff, and avoid SA taxes.

Flying through Dubai duty free and looking at the online store - all the headphones are half the price of the SA prices.

It’s insane.

It’s insane.

Korea is tax free import up to R8000 I think.
ANC wants a cut of all the money you spend to feed their Cadre.

Seriously doubt if it would. We see voltage swings greater than 10V every day. And the 60 vs 50 Hz thing won't affect the transformer.

My guess? Roughly the same time you decided to buy a Logitech headset.
I bought it to test the ability of the Logitech G Pro X vs the 800S to pinpoint sound like footsteps, gunshots, shuffles, and other environmental sounds. If it's half as good as my R6 crew say it is, then there's something to be said for a headset tuned for FPS gaming. I remain neutral on the matter until I have tested this for myself... I will report back.

So since we do not have a dedicated audio section on the forum, smacktalk will have to do.

I recently bought a DT990 600ohm, and my goodness is it amazing for gaming. The soundstage is super wide and the separation is insane. It is light and the pads are among some of the most comfortable I've experienced. Had them on for around 6hours yesterday with 0 discomfort at all. Only moot point for me is the non detachable cable, but I will mod that eventually.

If the 250ohm are anything close to this one, it's a no brainer for me. At their price point, it will be tough to beat for gaming.

Your thoughts @Ninja_Theory ?

Hey bud, I see you mentioned that you are considering modding your headphones to make it have a detachable cable. Im interested in this because one of my non-detachable headphones snapped off and its currently just sitting in its box.

Had a listen to the new Bose noise canceling headphones at Rosebank today:

Very clean and crisp sound but the bass lacked any depth and the sound was almost too clinical.

Compared to the warm and vibrant sound of my Momentum 2.0 OH, the SQ is very disappointing.

Did you just use Bose and "bass lacked" in the same sentence? :O

Yup. I have listened to the Quiet Comfort 35 before and noticed that they aren’t as punchy as my headphones.

It could be solved using the equalizer built into Spotify, but on the same settings, my headies are punchier than the QC.

Just something I noticed.

see the thing is that opinions on these bits of tonal range are all subjective ...... things like punchiness may not be as important to somebody else who is looking at other aspects - as an example what one person describes as punchy bass could be "tubby' or "overemphasized" for another

im not a fan of Sennheisers Momentum series because to me they lack most of the things that i look for in regards to Sound Quality - but i'm also not the biggest fan of Bose because they are generally overpriced for what they give you

without wanting to be a snob about it but in terms of sound quality you should rather use the terms "Sound Quality" in respect to headphones like HD600 or HD650 upward - to me the Momentum series is more a lifestyle orientated product and not a serious sound quality related item

I completely agree with you on all fronts. It’s subjective and I do have a lifestyle product, as opposed to an SQ product.

I will give the Momentum 2.0 OH the nod of approval from a warm and lively sound point of view. They are noted as having a vibrant audio style in reviews by several big SQ reviewers.

I do want the HD800S as my next headset.

I wonder if you wonderful fellows can chime in with some of your wisdom. I am looking for a fantastic set of wireless closed back headies for all occasions to be used mainly for office ,commute (bus/train) and travel. My reference is my senny HD598's with a fiio e10k 2. yes its not super audiophile grade, but it works.

I've read shitton of reviews and all of them say The Sony WH-1000 XM3 is the best, well i tried those and i am not impressed.
so far my list is:
Bose QC35ii
Bose NC700
Sony WH-1000 XM3
Sennheiser Momentum 3
Sennheiser PCX 550 II
Bowers & Wilkins PX7 (new version of the PX that is being released in a couple of weeks)

Reviews say the B&W PX have the best sound quality so i'm definitely leaning towards the PX7 at the moment. Never been a fan of Bose sound signature. Any recommendations?

PX is proper good although the design on the cups takes a bit of getting used to, I've found them uncomfortable when brand new, probably depends on the size of ones ears.
Best comfort imo is the xm3, can use those for hours

Yeah i heard about the cups, at least the new version PX7 is A LOT lighter than the current gen, will definitely go down to a shop to test them when they released. Agree'd on the Sony's, super comfy, but not the sound stage i'm after, its very enclosed/dark and the bass tends to get muddy at times.

You shouldn’t look for sound quality on Wireless headsets. They have ton of other factor to consider like comfort, noise cancellation, connectivity, battery etc

Though I think Drop has 400$ bundle for the XM3 and HD6XX so compromise?

Having tried most of that list, I can say the px550 lacked decent noise cancelling, and the highs were about 5db too high.
The xm3 sound good for certain bass genres but generally the bass is too boosted for my taste. Also they got hot compared to the qc35. The qc35 can pair to 2 devices simultaneously which is very handy, the sound signature is I think very Harmon curve. Also super comfy, not even the NC 700 are as comfortable.
The b&W px can sound amazing for ANC cans but generally with the ANC on they take a bit of a knock, try them via the USB cable to a PC though, wow. The deal breaker for me was they just too heavy for long flights.
Surface headphones were mostly a disappointment in all aspects.
Haven't tried any if the momentum wireless but I did like the sound and comfort of the momentum on ear wired cans for what that's worth.

My pick of ANC cans, qc35ii, I'd definitely consider the nc700 but for the price difference nah for me it's not a vast improvement and the comfort is a step back.

I might have a pair of one of the above available soon, drop me a PM if you have a specific set you're after.
