Hey guys,

It's been about ~5months with my first smart tv. I think it's time for a connected device. I wanted to stream One Punch Man yesterday and it took 30minutes to get my macbook setup and get everything going because the damn browser on the TV did not want to play the video...

What are my options? Ideally I want something that I can airplay to from my macbook/iphone. I don't want to go apple TV, as it is too limited for me.

I will be doing some research on airplay capabilities on a raspberry.

What are you guys using?

What's wrong with the latest generation apple tv, apart from the price..

if that's too much, then a raspberry works perfectly for me for airplay.

I run mygica 1900 pro. Awesome little machine with airmouse and keyboard.

I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi box S. I got one, user friendly and has no issues with Netflix. Apparently the My Gica ATV 495max has some trouble with Netflix.

1) I hear you can use STEAM LINK to stream your desktop/netflix/browser to your TV. Steam link devices are also very cheap now.
EDIT: Oh you can also buy a STEAM controller to wirelessly control the PC and play games on the TV

2) Cant you download CHROME REMOTE DESKTOP on your TV and then control VIA PC. The cheaper way

3) Buy an XBOX / PS and use their browser functions + netflix. My xbox one is 99% Netflix and 1% games

4) Run a long ass hdmi cable from PC.

5) MyGica TV box. Mine was abit slow but I think newer version run very well.

6) Throw the MAC away. There is no advice here about streaming to TV. Just throw it away. (MAC rage incoming 3... 2... 1....)

7) Google chrome cast?

8) MY FAVOURITE - Sell TV buy MASSIVE gaming monitor. Watch TV like that

We might need to have a 1 on 1 discussion regarding point 6...

I will try the Chrome remote desktop, thanks for all the options dude! <3

I have both a Chromecast and an Apple TV. I would love to hear what exactly is limited about the Apple TV as that is my go-to device. I run Netflix, Showmax, Amazon Prime Video and Plex through my Apple TV and is standalone, so no casting needed.

How is the browser on the Apple TV?

Why do you need a browser? Crunchyroll?
Mainly this:

But also to browse stack overflow, quora, reddit no sleep stories, imgur, facebook... Many many things. I want the freedom of using a web browser when I want to. The one that is built into my LG TV is absolute garbage though. Without necessarily streaming my Mac's desktop, but I want to be able to do that as well if I want to demo something on the TV during a living room design session or something.

Admittedly no clue, I have never had to browse anything on it, will check tonight and let you know. For all I know apple tv might have chrome on the app store.
Sorry, that was cocky/unfair of me. There is no browser available for the Apple TV unfortunately. :(

Ok fair enough, there is no browser, I see now. I tend to cast my browser through my iPhone to the apple TV via Airplay if I need to browse something I want on the tv, otherwise I normally just do it on my iPad while watching tv separately.

Maybe I should just rethink what and how exactly I want to do. Instead of trying to get a solution that can do everything...

The most important I guess would be airplay, which an Apple TV can do. Since I almost always have my iphone/ipad with me at the TV. The ipad/iphone can do almost everything I want to do, and I can airplay my macbook's display when neccesary.

I got some thinking to do. Then again, a raspberry pi can do ariplay as well with rplay. Might be the cheaper/iffier solution.

Sorry for shooting down ideas and thoughts in this thread. Been a hectic Thursday and I see now how shitty my responses have been.

Any non-apple solution is the right solution. Even when the devices concerned are Apple.

Well yeah the airplay from the phone/tablet works really well as well. Also the remote app for apple tv that you can put on your iphone is pretty solid. If you had no iphone I would have understood the reservation to apple tv, but apple tv gives you further access to your apple ecosystem which I enjoy. I subscribe to apple music so that is instantaneously available through the apple tv as well, and of course you have access to rent/buy movies throughout the entire iStore and the cloud brings it all together. Kind of a one stop shop permitting you have an iPhone which you do.

Because it's Apple. Any bit of distance and freedom you can get within their ecosystem you need to grab on like a big English bulldog and never let go.
I have nothing against the Apple eco system though. In fact, I welcome it. I have devices throughout Apple's entire offering. I even have an Apple Pencil. It's so good.

Nevermind then, it's just my Apple claustrophobia talking.

The only issue is the cost to entry. You have to follow a certain method of work to appreciate and make use of the eco system. Then you need to stay, because leaving means getting rid of everything again.

If I was working on a windows machine for my day to day job, I would probably only own an iPad from Apple. But I work with mac at least 10 hours a day. The eco system and ease of use of the devices works fantastic for me. Might not for others, but it does what it needs to do for me.

I might make the move when Dell develops/implements an eco system that integrates all devices, and the company I work for require me to use windows/linux as my main platform. For now I am super fortunate it is Apple.

Anyway, I digress. This is for TV and content streaming. :D

Bit of a necro so apologies, but

If you intend to mainly use Airplay then an older Apple TV will work just fine (I use a 2nd hand ATV3 (A1427) - my use case is Netflix, YouTube and Airplay and it's perfect for that purpose.

I do enjoy the fact that iPhone, iPad and Macbook work seamlessly with it.

If you already run an Apple house you would be silly not to get an Apple TV.

Especially with the TV services on the horizon and your current TV presumably not being one of those that will support it.

Unless your TV is potentially in that list then it may very well support Airplay directly soon enough.

Thanks guys!
@AfricanTech , I think we would want the 4k one though, to stream our laptops at full res. But those ATV3's are going for crazy good prices though...

@SauRoN, legit had to do a double take to your signature. For a moment I was wondering if the dude dropped the act and started to communicate properly...

Anyway, I really doubt our TV will support it. I bought one of the cheaper HDR TVs that were available in store. Guess I should just fork out for the latest apple TV and get it over with.

Thanks again to every for their recommendations and thoughts.
