HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

The 'Pro' variant is the black colours and its 250ohm. The normal DT990 wears the grey skirt, and you can get them in 250, 300 and 600 ohm iirc.

The normal "edition" ones are the consumer aimed set and come in 32, 250 and 600 and have a straight cord. The Pro is the studio variant which is black but the earpads are that grey silver color and only come in 250 Ohm and have the twisted (spring style) cord. As you can see I did some reading before purchasing.
Beyerdynamics original stance was that the ohm difference was only to match a variety of consumer needs/amplifiers, for example the 600 Ohm set wasn't designed to be "better" but because many (especially older) integrated amplifiers/AV receiver/ etc have very high output impedence the 600 Ohm variety kept you above the 1/8th or 1/10th rule of thumb. They do say the following on their FAQ:

The sound differences between the various impedances are very slight and most people can only actually hear them when the sounds are compared directly. They are, in any case, smaller than the differences between any one of these variants and competitor products.
In general, it can be stated that the resolution and precision of the high mids and highs is slightly better at higher impedances. There are barely any differences worth mentioning apart from this.

So, using your phone/PC - 32 Ohm
Avg. headphone amplifier - 250 Ohm (must add though that even my iPhone pushes these to decent volumes, though I'm not as mal as @HNO3 )
Integrated Amp/AV Receiver/Emotiva A-100 with jumpers bypassing the internal resistors - 600 Ohm

Thanks for correcting me.

Some good info there for those considering a DT990 purchase.

Thanks! Forgot to add (have edited) the DT990 Pros have a twisted cord not a straight one.

QUESTION TIME:

On my drive to work, albeit a very short one, I was wondering what would be your top pick headphone for gaming? If money was no issue, what would you select off the shelf for gaming? For me it should have somewhat forward lows and should be crystal clear with great imaging. I've come to enjoy headphones with greater imaging more for comp gaming than a wider soundstage. If the layering is done right, its perfect.

My pick would definitely be something planar. LCD-2? My M1060 is AMAZING for gaming, and the LCD-2 should do everything better.

I guess we also need to define "gaming", I don't play competitive gaming so for me the best headphones would be the ones that offer the greatest immersion in the game (be it an RPG, an adventure, flight sim, whateva...) so open soundstage and imaging would be the top two. Also, because I couldn't justify having headphones only for the limited gaming I do now, they should be suitable for music too. V shape is good as long as the mids are still clear (for voices and dialogue).

EDIT: So... I don't actually know which is the perfect "end-game" set. I reckon though LCD-2 probably fills the bill, but for some reason I've always liked the idea of the high-end Grados, never listened to them, I'm just a sucker for that industrial design. My current roadmap though is HE400i and/or HD58x/HD6xx... but will see.

The scenario is not what is best for you, but what is, in your opinion, the ultimate gaming can.... If you had to advise a friend what they should buy for gaming, non music use. And they have a firm budget, so you can pretty much select any phone. What you have them buy?

Gaming should refer to what ever games you enjoy playing I guess. Whether is for fps, RPG, story games...

Since i already recommend my headies to a friend- deaththekid. I am sticking with dt770 due to comfort and price point.

With an infinite budget, you would still buy DT770?

Yip- until i test and find say the lcd2 better thats my choice. Ticks the most boxes.

As a gamer the majority of cash would go into my rig anyway.

I am realist so my decison has to make sense lol

I guess my point was that my end-game set wouldn't include the "crosshair mode" some comp gamers want (think some sound cards had this effect which empasised footstep frequencies".

Anyway... I added this edit but to prevent it getting burried:

Cash is of no consequence in this recommendation... You are unable to play my game! :p

So if you had an infinite amount of money, and you could only have 1 set on your gaming desk. Which would you choose first?

Sennheiser Orpheus 2, but the desk would need to be big enough to fit the custom amp.

edit: I'm not playing your game right am I? :) :p

Hahah, nice one! If that is honestly what you would pick, all the power to you... But I have a funny feeling that you would not. :D

Unfortunately I don't have much (read: any) hands-on experience with the higher end stuff to choose amongst them, but based on reviews probably DT1990s assuming they have everything I love about the DT990s so far but better (and maybe tamer highs) or as an alternative HE560s again, as I liked the HE400s when I had some time with them and assume these would be similar but "more"

I am very interested in the 800/800S. That will be my next purchase. I'm also interested to hear that incredible detail and humongous soundstage for gaming.

What are you thinking amp wise for the 800?

See his sig
The Audio-GD R2R-11 DAC/amp of course

Thats a dangerous game to play assuming an amp that sounds good with the HD650 will sound good with the HD800. If you go solid state and with something that pairs well with a darker headphone, you could very well end up with something lifeless and shrill.

R2R11, by coincidence or not, actually pairs really well with the HD800. But it is true, the HD800 can sound wildly different on different amps, but so does the HD600/650.

I was considering the HD800S, I guess with eq it should be possible to get the lows at a 'fun' level. It should be a little over represented. Ships flying around and explosions going off should have some oooomph behind the sound. Playing Apex with the Monoliths is a lekker experience, when things get busy and tense feels like you are in a super hero movie.
have you purchased from these guys before?

Reminds of watching Z talk about the TH909 which he called Schizophrenic due to how it would randomly sound amazing or dull depending on the amp, not caring about power or price range or anything.

Damn they're pretty though.

Have no idea yet. Too scared to start researching it properly because I know what happens when I start researching something seriously (and I want to stay happily married a while longer).

Yeah like I was before this thread started...

There was a rabit hole disclaimer at the start of this thread. Who wants to verify that?
