Good day,
It is time to replace my shocks, and the guy at BMW service department told me it would be R6000 or more, not sure what is included in that amount.
Now for the question, I found that buying Sachs OEM parts would save me a few bucks, and Google "says" that they are a well known brand and supply good quality parts.
So, to those with the knowledge, would you advice me to buy them and then let the local BMW install them etc. or should I rather stick with BMW original parts and let them handle everything from the start?

Would saving the most, not be to install the shocks myself/BMW mechanic afterhours and then take my car to service centre for system update? Not sure if this is allowed...

1) What car is it?

2) I'm assuming you not in motorplan either?

3) I would suggest Kino or Bilstein shocks if you willing to spend that amount, or to Goldwagen, give them your Vin number and find out what they have available. Very rarely does Bmw or any car maker manufacture their own parts, these parts are often made by different brands in the industry, ie Bosch, etc and BMW just rebrand them in house. Choose a germ a brand from Gw and get a private Bmw mech to install it for you or even a good Tyre fitment center such super quick at the Glen.

He means German brand [emoji3]

Ill give GW a call and see what they recommend and then get Supa Quick to install it, but wont I still have to tale my car to BMW to get the computer reset?

i thought the only shocks bmw had were when they send you bills
You funny.

BMW takes normal shocks and puts an OEM BMW sticker on them - you could probably find the retail version of the shocks with a little bit of a Google.

Holy shit, I found an amazing website for you RealOEM.com - Select Your BMW Model

U should be able to get OEM like shocks from Monroe/Gabriel and the likes.
Goldwagen does keep BMW parts so maybe try them

Koni Boksburg can assist with H&R/Koni springs and shocks

Of course doing this job yourself would be the cheapest, however you do require some springs clamps in order to compress the spring so that you can strip the strut and replace the shock.
Just one thing BE VERY VERY careful and make sure that the spring clamp is in the correct place and doesnt fly off as that can cause some serious injuries

Thanks for all the help guys.
Okay the plan is to firstly phone the local Goldwagen and get the brands and prices and then compare them to the other suggestions here.
With regards to the installation, I know the local supa quick guys very well, will give them a call and see if they cant do the installation and then ill just go over to BMW to reset the computer.

Nothing needs to be rest on computer by Bmw if you changing shocks. Just change them, do alignment again and you good to go.

Weird, guy said that my shocks needed to be changed when he inserted my key into to doc thing. Ill see if there's any warning messages after installing the shocks, thanks.

there shouldnt be anything to reset on the computer.. If there is let me know and we can arrange.
I have the diagnostics tools for BMW

Yeah he was talking kak... The key fob will not not tell you what's wrong with the car, it wi only gives them the cars mileage etc and specs of the car. So they basing their "suggestion" on the service intervals which the dealerships and brands go by.

I've got an e87 as well, I've done shocks and now coilovers, trust me, there's nothing that needs to be set via the computer. Just do alignment once you done.

Don't go back to the dealership...

He probably leant on thee fender when he went to the car and you didn't notice. It is really easy to determine if your shocks are gone just by pressing down on the car and releasing. There should be no bouncing

Ill do the "test" tomorrow and see what happens.
So if there's no bouncing then they should be good?
Ill do front and back.

Really miss the old days where you could pretty much service your car from top to bottom by yourself. One reason why I miss my old Citi Golf

I sent that RealOEM link to my mechanic and they said that they have been using it for over 2 years now.

Pretty rad idea but must be a bastard to maintain.

Bilstein are very good. they provide the suspension for most rally and race cars.

I had no issues with mine and they come with a lifetime warranty against leaking.

I would assume they offering you the B4 range (Direct replacement for OEM) so should be fine, I had the B8 range on my car so can't really comment on the quality

Yes, the B4 range.
Still waiting from other shops though

That's a very good brand and I've called various shops for quotes and GoldWagon are often the cheapest. Midas was R200 more for my oil than GW. I was so shocked, I asked the guy if it was indeed the correct oil I asked for. I told him it was R680 at GW and he just said 'ok' and I hung up. He don't give a fuck.
