You can get a Rift bundle from Amazon for around R8.5k depending on exchange rate, maybe cheaper if there are any Black Friday sales. Normal price is $400, but has been down to $350 on sale.
$350 would be a steal!

Don't know how much lenses will cost for them but remember you won't need to have protective coatings or have them specially thinned etc which is where the cost for glasses lenses actually often comes in.

Best bet is probably to order the ones specifically made for VR, they probably thin the lenses.

Fucking lolzors.

Nice going there with your advice.

Nah man sounds too complicated. And then you get CUD and want to move to a better set with new technology and then the mess starts all over again, each time adding around ~2 grand.

Not to mention I lose out of my nice True Surround headsets. So nah, I'll stick to fantsypants monitors for at least the next decade.

Sorry, my bad, made an assumption that turned out incorrect. Best bet of course is to measure and test before.

Not to mention I lose out of my nice True Surround headsets.

You can remove the headphones on the rift and wear your own ;)
You haven't experienced true surround until the sound is actually spatial and follows where you look... just saying :)

oh; last note on glasses. I can't wear mine in any VR set to date. I use contacts when I plan on spending more than 30minutes in VR.
Great explanation and advice. But this is a bit of a show stopper for me. I can hardly take a shit without my glasses.. have been set on vr as a 2019 cud treat.

My glasses attempt cost about R600 so not TOO bad, and the lenses can be recycled (unless your eyes goes for a ball of shit)

On the sound. Holy balls, positional audio on the Rift is incredible. Much better than my Steelseries Pro

As mentioned guys you can get specific lens inserts and you can wear the VR headsets with glasses (just take precautions to not scratch, e.g. lens protector). New models (e.g. Oculus Go) even come with a spacer to better suit glasses wearers, so it is getting better and hopefully new gen headsets will be even better. Heck, some people even buy cheapo thin frame glasses specifically for use in the rift.

$9.95 glasses and looks like international shipping is another $9.95

My 2009 cud treat was to have lasek treatment, before then I couldn't find my glasses next to the bed on the side table...

Same here, do way too many sports where I'm wearing a helmet...bit the bullet and had mine done in 2012, best money I've ever spent.

So what is a typical second hand price for a Oculus Rift setup? Which includes The headset, 2 controllers and 2 sensors?

I saw good condition second hand setups foing for R6k on here in the past few months.

Something like 8-9k? That's why I was looking at the WMR sets which is about half of that.
That's new price. you can order it straight from amazon, landed at your doorstep for R8420 INCL shipping and import taxes.

If I was a little closer to you we could totally split buy a bundle to test :D One weekend mine, one weekend yours. Like divorced parents :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Trying to convince my cousin, although he is only here every 3rd month[emoji16]

I'd rather spend a little extra and get a Vive over the Rift, if you're reluctant to try a less mainstream but just as capable device like the Pimax.

SDE and just visual experience on the Rift falls short for me. The Vive is acceptable, but only just.

Still maintain the Pimax for sheer clarity and lack of SDE far supersedes both the Rift and Vive. The 8k headset from Pimax with the massive FOV is going to be interesting. Even more interesting is going to be the rig needed to run that headset :ROFLMAO:. That's going to be a massive barrier to adoption I think

The Pimax 8k isnt the right option. It upscales content. the 5k+ is the better option visually. Any review will tell you that

But that's all it is...the "sound of 8K"...it's not 8K...typical Chinese misleading marketing.

I think the problem is...there is no hardware that can properly run it at full 170deg FOV
A 2080Ti barely keeps the 5K+ at 90fps at 150deg FOV

I don't see the point of buying a Pimax 5K+ headset now while you'll have to wait for the next gen of cards (RTX2180Ti or RTX3080Ti...who knows) to be able to actually drive the headset...by that time there will be newer shinier headsets available - hopefully with foviated rendering as well.

Are you talking about the Vive Pro or the regular Vive? Because general reviewer consensus is that the Vive and Rift are by and large much of a muchness with Rift actually winning over the Vive with respect to SDE but losing out due to having more god-rays and slightly narrower field of view. Difference is slight though.

E.g review:
https://kotaku.com/htc-vive-vs-oculus-rift-the-comparison-we-had-to-make-1771122831

Edge: Oculus Rift. Neither headset has bad optics, but the Rift has a slight edge on the Vive in most respects. The glare on the Rift is worse, but Oculus more than makes up for that with a slightly sharper image and slightly less noticeable screen-door effect, and more importantly by making it easier for me to focus on more things without moving my head or re-centering my view. The Vive has a roomier field of vision, but like I said, the moment I’m playing a VR game I barely notice anything outside of what I’m looking at. In the end I prefer the Rift’s more in-focus view to the Vive’s slightly wider, less focused view.

Hey @bloedmonster
If/when Rebeltech sorts out my faulty GPU you are welcome to come test the Rift at my place. Got a G920 as well for the karretjies.

I think you live close by.

Something I'd like to toss in the ring as well, albeit it be slight. Many people report a slightly better FOV when using a VR Cover from vrcover.com
Being closer to the lenses and all that. No actual numbers but apparently it's very noticeable.

For HTC, people are doing a 2017 GearVR lens swap to improve the "sweetspot".

Here's how I would choose:

The I have all the monies options:

If you wanted the best today, it'll probably be the Vive Pro considering it'll be some time before you can order a Pimax 5k+ and have it on your doorstep in a a few days. At this point, it's months at best.
Here's the latest Pimax production update. Production Progress Update 1106

Down from that I would probably go with the Samsung HMD Odyssey + *plus* which starts shipping in 2 weeks. Hear me out.
You get a Vive Pro screen with even less SDE (slightly more blur) and can combine it with Vive controllers and lighthouses for amazing tracking. The cool part is that it's super mobile if you want to take it to a friend's place. Instead of carrying around all the base stations, etc etc, just use internal tracking with the included controllers. Perfect for a Beats Saber party or whatever.
The downside is comfort. From what I've read, it tries to chew and eat your head.
HMD Odyssey+ - Windows Mixed Reality Headset HMD - XE800ZBA-HC1US | Samsung US

The I am poor people options:

Rift
Good;
Better software experience with slightly better SDE, those amazing ass touch controllers and a much better price. Pretty good 360 tracking with 3 sensors. Already included headphones and more practical headband.
Bad;
Tracking a bit worse than Vive in terms of play area size. Cables are short.

Vive
Good;
Even better 360 tracking. Future proofing- tracking puck, valve knuckles, official wireless, SteamVR 2.0 backwards compatibility and because SteamVR is more of an open platform, you can use your Vive tracking hardware with future headsets like the Odyssey.
Bad-
SDE worse than the Rift, bigger hit on older hardware, improved headband/headset is quite expensive. Lots of reports on controllers failing.

Pimax 4k
If you like watching movies *cough* and sit in a chair keyboard, mouse and gamepad VR, like Elite Dangerous, Subnortica and other simulation style games.
It's cheap, the resolution is great and the SDE is hardly noticeable.
Bad-
Options to get tracking is very limited. Ghosting.

Lenovo Explorrrerrer - Or other WMR devices.
Cheap. Decent tracking. Nice Resolution. Portable. Will kickstart your VR cud journey. I think of them as the Consoles of the VR world.

I don't need VR in my life now I can wait options:

Pimax 5k+ with their SteamVR Tracking 2.0 controllers and lighthouses.
Clarity is much better than the 8k, using the native resolution and all.
Awesome FOV.
Can drive it with existing hardware, sort of.

Pimax 8k X. The X will support native resolution input and won't make use of up scaling. So all the benefits of the 5k+, but with a higher res.
Can you say RGTRX3080Ti Titan Black XPpP Edition in Sli?

If you want to be more mainstream I guess you could wait for the Vive Pro bundle as well, not sure why you'd want that over the higher FOV sets though.

I would say yes if you like exploring new titles, there's always something new to discover.
VR is just in a pretty weird place right now where every headset lacks something from the competitor and no matter what you do your sacrificing something.

The best overall headset atm is the Oculus Rift, it has a nice eco system, but it's screen and lenses is starting to feel outdated. If you have an Oculus Go, see how clear the text is it's understandable why people are starting to get impatient. The controllers are amazing though, you kind of grow attached to them and can never look back at another controller...

If you new to VR, I would kind of suggest looking towards the Samsung Odyssey+ if you are more into Simulators/ Racing games and don't want to go through the set up hassle as the Rift since you literally just plug in one cable I think.

Vive to expensive especially in South Africa.

Or just wait it out, for the Oculus Quest. It might not have the graphical power of the PC, but it's going to be a heck of a lot fun and really easy to use.
It's going to be the mainstream of VR, imagine being to play Beat Saber/Supershot just about anywhere you want.

Is one too many?

When you get tangled up in it, yes.

Seriously considering the wireless options, but they are different for each headset - we really need an universal solution that will work with any headset's HDMI and USB.
