I've never actually lived in London, although I still have a flat in London that I rent out and can move to just if things take a turn for the worse in SA...

Most of the free stuff I've had in SA have been from friends who have emigrated to other parts of the world. Also people advertise plants for free - it's just a case of needing to dig them out and cart them away. I've collected R1000s of plants including mature Aloes, Agaves and Yuccas. Also Clivias/Agapathus plants need to be thinned out every 7 years or so, which gives other gardeners the chance to sell, swap or even take for free.

She is an only child and wanted to move back to SA to spend some time with her parents before they kicked the bucket. We triedto persuade them to move to the UK or somewhere else in Europe but they wouldn't. Once we relocated to SA they bought the house next door so we could keep an eye on them.

I was on Freecycle in the UK and got a few small items locally. When I emigrated to SA I needed to sell or clear out loads of items. Anything that didn't sell on Gumtree or eBay was either given to friends/neighbours or advertised on Freecycle/Gumtree for free collection. Every thing that was taken for free reduced the trips I needed to make to the "local" dump, which was a 10 mile drive each way.

I even got a 42U rack for free - the only catch was I had to collect from an office block in the centre of London!

Here in South Africa we use bananas to measure distance
