Hey everyone.

So I'm a varsity student and want to connect to the varsity Wifi from my flat. The nearest router is about 800m away with some buildings blocking my line of sight.

I'm thinking about if getting one of these:

UBAM-NSM2 Ubiquiti AirMax NanoStation M2: 2.4GHz Hi Power 2x2 MIMO AirMax TDMA Station, 2 LAN 24V PoE, 1 Year

Or one of these

UB-NS2 Ubiquiti NanoStation2, 2.XGHz b/g Outdoor CPE Antenna, 16MB SDRAM, 4MB Flash Memory, Integrated...

So. I'm Completely clueless. Would it work? And Whats the difference between these two products and What else do i need?

Thanks in advance!

Would also love to know the answer to this

Wireless has so many variables that often it is impossible to know if something will work with out actually trying it.
LOS if extremely important so I would say it is unlikely to work if there is a building in the way.

The difference between the two is that the NSM2 comes with more features like a fast processor, more storage, more ram, extra lan port and other things. I would suggest rather purchasing from Scoop though: Ubiquiti Networks - AirOS - - 2.4GHz Nano MIMO, AIRMAX

That device is everything you need besides some knowledge about setting it up :) Bear in mind that this is a wireless router (not just a wireless adapter) and are often hard or impossible to setup with the complicated security that varsities use to protect their Wifi

Those nanostations only have 10dBi antennas, and since you expect poor reception, I would not recommend them. Rather get something like a MikroTik SEXTANT which has an 18dBi antenna for the same price, or an outdoor kit with seperate grid antenna (these go up to 31dBi).

MikroTik SEXTANT 5HnD

5.8GHZ 27DBI COMPLETE HIGH PERFORMANCE CPE

This is also a lot of monies to spend without knowing whether it will even get any signal...

nano stations are awesome. i used a couple a year ago to setup a wifi bridge between 2 x buildings for CCTV. however i think they need to have a clear line of sight. i'm not sure. but the should cover 800m easy. but a bigger antenna would just keep future problems out.

firstly make sure which frequency the network is even running.

No point getting a Wireless A (5Ghz) device and the network is standard B/G/N (2.4Ghz)
Outdoor kit with Antenna would most likely be your best solution, else a standard Access Point that supports an external Antenna, then get a VERY strong, outdoor, directional antenna attached to it.

first things first find out if any one else in the building has connected then try to link using a similar config to him . unless its a illigal hook up then good luck have fun dont get caught

Hmm...is the WiFi intended for beyond the boundaries of the varsity???? I highly doubt this. No equipment is going to help you if the signal is dropping off just outside the boundaries....which is completely configurable by the owner. Do a site survey with your phone and test where the signal drops off. Without doing this it is a complete waste of time. Also I would not risk getting a warning on my varsity record for free WiFi. ;)

Hey guys, thanks for all the feed back. Dustfox borrowed one from a friend of his and we (actually him and another friend) did some fiddling. Range is great but as people have said LOS is super important. Will keep this thread updated over the next month as we continue to fiddle (when we have time).
