Hey guys. I hope everyone's well.

I need help with regard to upgrading my cpu.

I currently have a ryzen 1500af and an asrock b450m steel legend mobo.

I want to upgrade to a ryzen 5600x but will have to update my bios first. However, on the asrock website, they say that updating the bios while using an older cpu (in my case the 1500af) is not recommended.

I just wanted to know if I should heed that recommendeation. If so, how should I go about updating and upgrading my cpu? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Umar Moolla

There’s limited space to store info in the BIOS. Do they can only store X number of CPUs. When updating to 5x00 series, it’s possible the latest BIOS update will remove support for your CPU, to free up space for the newer ones. That’s why the warning.

Ideal scenario would be to get a 2x00 or 3x00 CPU and use that to do the update as it should still be supported.

Otherwise maybe. Google if anyone else has done that upgrade with your board and whether or not they lost CPU support.

I dont have any experience with amd bios uodates, but as it sounds its more aimed at those that like to update everything including the firmware/bios but without actually planning to upgrade hardware.

So think its more a warning to them, as you will loose support for your older cpu and pc might not boot after the upgarde. The old one will no longer be supported and would probably need ti chnsgeto new cpu after upgrade.

Please check this as i have no experience in these amd bios's

OK so thanks to @ichigo, I just took the plunge and updated the bios on the 1600af, worked. Ran the pc on the updated mobo for a few minutes, checking out all my apps to see if all was well.

All is in order, swapped out my cpu for the 5600x and everything is smooth.

Thanks guys.

Glad you’re sorted, it’s the only problem with Asrock is that they often have incremental BIOS updates and drop support for the older CPUs as they go up in revision.
