So with the education system not being suitable for everyone, my boss and I have been running a Cottage School for many years now. With Covid-19 we have moved over to online full time.
What we do:
- We offer a home-school environment for learners, based on the GED system (It is American but internationally recognized) *Note: The GED can be converted to a Grade 12 Equivalent in South Africa
- We manage their work, their exams, tuition, etc.
- We organize interesting and fun social activities where possible
- We encourage each learner to be who they want to be and grow as an individual.
- In addition to their GED curriculum we encourage and facilitate online courses in areas the learners are interested in.
- We also work with barriers to learning, ADHD, etc.

What do they need?
- Laptop/Desktop PC or tablet
- Internet connection
- Headphones with a microphone (Webcam is great too)
- A space at home where they can study and not be bothered

What subjects are taught?
- Mathematics (Even Math lit learners will cope)
- Science (This covers basic physics, biology, and a small amount of chemistry)
- English
- Social Studies (Consisting of American History and Economics)

Extra Mathematics and Science Tuition are included in their school fees. So you pay us and we handle the rest.

*Additional Tutor slots over and above those included will be charged at an extra rate.

Learners will not only learn self-discipline but time management and other life skills while studying at home.
Learners will have more free time to spend on what they are passionate about.

How do exams work?
- Your child can register and write exams when they are at least 17 years of age and have a valid ID Document.
- Exams are scheduled on a per learner basis and is done online at registered exam centers around the country (Exam centers are available worldwide too)

This allows a learner to make sure they are ready before writing an exam.

Each learner can learn at their own pace. We usually have them write their strongest subject first so they can get over the exam anxiety that learners usually have.

At what age can they start?
With the 4 GED exams as a final goal, they can start at any age, we usually find learners of about 14 years of age or above to cope quite well.

Fees: *Please email us at homeschoolheadquarters@gmail.com for more information.
School Fees range between R1200 and R2800 per month.

Question and suggestion

- Socail Studies (Consisting of American History and Economics)

Might want to correct that misspelling.
And - why would a child not based in America want to learn American History? Come to think of it, why would a child based in America want to learn a very much whitewashed version of American History as taught in the GED.

It's a really interesting service you offer, much needed in this day and age. Electives not an option?

Ah thank you for that, I sometimes swap letters around (might be a mild form of dyslexia, my sister has it too)

So the exams are run by an American Company, unfortunately, the GED system is sticking to American history. I can only guess that it would be too much trouble for them to accommodate every other country with its own history...

There are only these 4 subjects, so if I understand your "Electives not an option?" question correctly, then no, they cannot choose from a set of subjects. This is why we also do online courses with the learners every year on a topic they are interested in, so they can broaden their skill and knowledge base over the 4 subjects.

Some students do make-up courses, game design, coding, farming, photography, etc...

In terms of history, I have found that it is no longer as whitewashed as it once was, especially with our juniors and seniors group, because they learn the history at places such as Khan Academy, where it has been suitably updated.

Please PM me if you have any more questions and I will do my best to answer them for you :D

As someone who did an American curriculum for much of my school career (and took history as a subject) it was a very pleasant change from the stuff that we for the most part already know or learn outside of school.
