I need some advice, I am hoping that someone on here may be able to help me with this one.

So I finally got around to getting that GPU upgrade and decided on the 7900XT.

Installed it late yesterday afternoon (did do a DDU), fired up Cyberpunk 2077 and did some tuning. I immediately noticed frequent stuttering, similar to what it would feel like if there is frequent disk access on HDD. Problem is, OS runs from NVME, game is installed on another NVME. I did not experience this at all with my 3070.

I did some searching and it seems that this is a common issue with the 7900XT on some configurations, tried pretty much everything I could find on Reddit, but the issue still persists. It seems like luck of the draw and I am not so l;ucky on this one.

I have also started to notice very slight flickering (regional / rapid increase & decrease in gamma) while being in Windows (even when writing this post).

Tracking what is happening with the GPU, it seems that the utilization drops along with the clocks and all that seems to correlate with the frame-rate drop + spike in frame time. All the tempps appear to be fine, very good airflow in the case.

Is the stuttering only in Cyberpunk? Tried reinstalling the game? Utilisation drops sounds like it could be a software issue of some kind.

Also how does CPU usage % look during the stutters? Is it spiking up?

Will have a look later when I have some time, will try other games maybe even install Starfield and try that too. Will check some more detailed metrics if I can, but quick observation was that CPU usage is stable, it is just the GPU that goes into "clippy mode".

@Valheru are you using two seperate power cables for the GPU or one of those dual 6+2 6+2 cables?

*edit* what PSU are you using? I see its not listed.

Probably wouldn't recommend Starfield to determine stability, it's not a very well optimised game.

No, I dislike them becuase they are fucking ugly.

Using the premium sleeved cable kit, 2 separate cables.

All this from a Corsair HX1000.

ToDo list for later:
  • verify MPO is disabled
  • 2 or more different games, check CPU & GPU temps / usage
  • disable / close iCue
  • update MB bios
  • disable SAM/rebar from bios
  • re-install Witcher2077
  • full win10 reset, install drivers, try CP2077 again

What brand is the card? I know I had issues with an EVGA 3080Ti I bought. Installed their GPU tool and it picked up there was a vBIOS update. No issues after that.

Maybe try installing the manufacturers GPU tool, or see if you can find the BIOS on techpowerup's database and flash a more recent vBIOS. Long shot but worth a look

XFX 7900XT Merc 310

Their website is pretty bare, all their links for downloads redirest to AMD website(s).

Any chance it's an XFX card? I had a customer with this very issue asking me what he can do just yesterday. Unless that was you...

Yeah seems you are SOL here.

No XT bios listed.

I would suggest a fresh install of Windows (not a reset) 23H2 ISO is out now.

Install Windows with ethernet/internet disconnected. Install AMD chipset drivers, reboot. AMD GPU drivers. Rebootr then reconnect ethernet and let Windows do its thing when connect to the interwebs.

Profit.

No it wasn't, this is a 2nd hand card with POP from Wootware.

The Corsair cables, they are from you. As are the fans keeping it cool. As are the Commander the fans are connected to.

You should run afterburner with the gpu overlay to see what happens with your gpu at the time the spikes/stutter occur.

This isn't the 90's, tape hasn't been around since the turn of the century.

Those AMD screenies appear to show something odd, those massive dips (trianlges) along with the spikes in the middle blue one for frame timing.

Will check out afterburner too if I don't win.

This is probably the 10th time I'm failing to make the link between your username and your real name

Made no change in Cyberpunk 2077. I saw GPU clock dips to as low as 1600's.

Played a race in Grid Legends. Rock. Fucking. Solid. WTF.

Add Diablo IV to the list of running just fine

Well, well, well, would you look at that.

Tried BFII, worked like a charm.

Decided to update the BIOS, lost all my settings :(, but Cyberpunk 2077 now actually runs fine.
  • verify MPO is disabled - YES
  • 2 or more different games, check CPU & GPU temps / usage - YES
  • update MB bios - YES 3002 --> 3404
  • disable SAM/rebar from bios - NO, re-enabled, works fine it seems
I will re-dial in my PBO2 + undervolt + secondary timings and try the geames again. Looking much better, but still not very impressed with AMD. "It just works" isn't a meme, itx Leather Jacket (TM) telling fanboys to get fucked.

Starting to think I should rather go back to NVidia, this amount of foreplay is not worth it.
