Okay so long story short

I want to get some qualies behind my name ( I got some very basic electrical but that never worked out )

I'm the supply chain specialist for an engineering co now ( yes with basically zero qualifications )

I want to do a short course in finance next year

Found some with WITS for around 15 K

NOW people that have done it , is a degree better or will short courses plus work experience guve me a better edge ?

Degree is a problem financially and timewise , I can pay the short course cash and have about an hour and half open at work everyday + afterhours.

I'm hoping to put a serious move towards Aus at the back end of 2025 so anything to make myself more attractive to potential employers , I need some advice/guidance and this is the only place can think of now to ask

Well i might be wrong but Aussies are thirsty for a degree. Not sure how they view short courses, but with a degree it is easier for them to justify issuing you a work Visa.

Good to et the thinking going bud, you do however need to be more specific - which of your current skills can compliment a financial qualification?

What is on the Aus skills shortage list?

Given how closely i work with Finance at my current job I figure anything right now relating to Finance would be a bonus

No idea what's specifically in shortage but I figure being under 30 will be a big plus for me , The idea is not to go over on a job requirment exclusively.

I've got enough to motivate me finishing engineering there , got no dependants , have experience in multiple industries and have friends there that''ll put a roof over my head for 3 months

I'm just figuring finance cause there's so much opportunity there , I'll do something I like whatever that may end up as.

If i hate a job i probably won't be there more than a handful of days

Ah, I get you - IMHO short courses are normally good as additions to existing knowledge & don't hold the weighting that a degree (in a new discipline) does.

Drop me a PM & can help with some guidance (have put lots of thought to future finance/accounting studies).

Just going to chime in with some future immigration advice here.

Firstly, you'll need something to make you attractive to Aus - just being under 30 doesn't do much - The age limit for Max points is actually 33, so there's no rush.

To give you some better information for the future:

1. Certs don't really count for much, degree and experience do (see above calc)

2. You'd much rather go on a 189/190 PR visa, they take long and cost is higher, but you get major benefits in terms of healthcare, childcare, loans etc. and can move jobs if you're unhappy (you can on a sponsored work visa, but it's obv more difficult)

3. Join a facebook group called Aussiekaners, there is a wealth of info there which you should start looking at now, and there's people happy to assist when you ask questions.

4. Do some further research before just studying something, if your plan is to move to Aus, it may not benefit you or you might find something that benefits you more....

Found some nice looking courses but the thought of " sure is nice to have but doesn't mean much for getting out " started leaning on me heavy.

Applied for an exemption certificate from Unisa as I was recommended by one of the places ii was engaging about short courses to look at their Project management Degree.

IF the certificate gets issued ( I was hopelessly unfocussed in school ) I'll be going with that , 4 years part time with 3 online classes 18:00 - 21:00 on weekdays.

It'll be fantastic for what I'm doing now and then I'll have a degree when i get round to the age where I think i'll start getting ready to leave

Exemption did not get granted even though I'm over the minimum age an have a good job history doing jobs better than people with degrees for those jobs .. alas.

Looking at 1 year courses to get the NQF level that will then qualify me for exemption and then maybe the degree , at least another year away now.

Looking forward and up but that was a rather shitty call to receive
