TL;DR - PS4 Blu-ray drive makes a faint ticking noise initially and won't work (like as if it's off) then after a few/several minutes, the ticking noise goes away, and it's now ready to take and eject discs like normal, but then shows "Unrecognised Disc" error on screen, and has never worked again since.

How you going?

I have a PlayStation 4 Slim 500GB (CUH-2116A model), and I have an issue with the Blu-ray disc drive (BDD). When I switch the PS4 on, the BDD has a faint and consistent ticking noise every second (literally like the sound of a clock ticking on your wall, just not as loud). While it's doing this, the BDD does not work at all and won't take in any discs.

After anywhere from 5-30 minutes, the BDD stops ticking and will now accept discs. Problem is, it won't read the discs.

When I have the PS4 sitting horizontally, the BDD takes the disc in and then makes a whole bunch of noises like it's trying to figure out whether there's a disc actually inserted or not and then the motor and rollers make the sound of it pulling the disc in again to double-check that it's actually taken the disc in properly the first time around. Eventually, the BDD just goes silent. Nothing else happens, and nothing pops up on the screen. All while this happens, the actual motor that spins the disc does not spin/start up.

Then, when I eject the disc, stand the console up vertically and insert a disc, then suddenly the disc begins to spin... for a second or 2, then stops, then spins again for a second or 2 and stops, and so this cycle continues without actually reading the disc. It'll either do this indefinitely or sometimes after as little as two or three attempts, it'll pop up with the "Unrecognised Disc" error on screen.

I've tried lightly (and not so lightly) tapping around the BDD to see if it would magically do anything, but it does not. Essentially I've tried everything the internet has to offer, all to no avail. I've had the PS4 and BDD apart (and I'm not even kidding you) at least 25-30 times now trying this and that, checking fuses, cleaning the lens, manually inserting a disc and starting the console from a cold start, checking continuity on each of the contacts one by one on all the ribbon cables connecting the BDD to make sure there are no broken connections, checked the BDD rollers, motors, switches, re-installing the latest 9.60 May 2022 firmware in safe mode, rebuilt the database, etc. It seems to me like the BDD is dead somewhere, somehow. Or, (and this is a BEEG oof), the Renesas chip on the mainboard is dead which essentially controls the BDD.

What do you guys think? Anybody else run into this or similar issues? Any help is appreciated. For what it's worth, I am a PC/hardware/technical kind of person. It's just gotten to the point where I've tried everything at my disposal, and all have failed. I'm looking at purchasing a new lens assembly (like this one), hoping it'll solve my issues.

(Thanks for taking the time to read my essay)

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new Blu-ray drive for the PS4. Once I receive it and install it, I'll update and close this thread, so if anyone in the future comes across this same issue, hopefully, it'll help them out.
