Asking here as I don't know my asshole from my elbow when it comes to PSU's etc.

Installed GPU into PC, PSU only has 6 pin connector so connect that to GPU. (No idea why it doesn't have an 8-pin)
Everything works fine except the one fan sort of spins then dies then spins etc.

Question is, is it the fan thats borked or is it the PSU not giving it enough juice?
Follow up question, is it worthwhile to get a 8-pin to molex cable?
GPU in question is RX470 and the PSU is POS no name brand 550w

The fans not spinning could be because of 0db mode that is enabled on the gpu.
I would however get rid of your pos 550w psu and get a decent 550/650w like a superflower or the like.
Reason being that when the pos psu goes it will take other components with it, it's not a case of if, but rather when.

Check in your gpu software to see if 0db mode is enabled.
Also does the gpu fans spin if you add a load to the gpu like furmark or the like?

Not going to give technical advice as there are definitely more knowledgeable people who can help. All advice I will give is if possible get a decent PSU, its all fun and games untill your pc goes boom

Sounds like the fan/fan controller, if you PSU could not power the fan then it also wont be able to power the GPU and rest of your system without you having constant BSODs and restarts.

Just further on my post check Radeon Software for the Zero RPM mode setting

I disabled it on my 6900xt as the idle temp was around 50c with the fans standing still which I wasn't happy about.
Now with little to no fan speed (like 15-20%) it idles at 44c which is closer to cpu idle temp as well and makes me happier.

Its only the one fan thats struggling and that was under load, so thats why its a bit of head scratcher for me as there is the two variables, a suspicious fan and a suspicious psu

Hmm under load it should definitely be running even with Zero RPM enabled.
Perhaps it's a dud fan on your gpu, but this could be caused by underlying issues on the PSU as well.

As a first test I would get a decent donor PSU to test this with and see if it runs better, and then if not you might just be S.O.L on the gpu, so gotta look for a replacement fan from Ali Express or the like.

Yeah that sounds like a plan, I've had more shit with psu's than fan gpu's so Ill cross that off the list first.
