For the last 3/4 years, I have taken my motorbike down from my residence in Glenwood to the Durban beachfront for a run and a breakfast when I'm not rostered to work. I generally park the bike on the pavement just next to parking area as I have had encounters with people before who get angry when I use a car parking bay for a motorbike (actually caught a few people tampering with my bike because it was in the parking bay).
This morning, I head on down to the beachfront, go for my run, have breakfast and head on back to my bike when I spot a municipal lady with a notepad walking around my bike and jotting down notes on a notepad (I assume she's just checking the license and that it's roadworthy). I get to the bike and ask her if anything is wrong. She looks up from her notepad, tears out the page and hands it to my saying I have a R500 fine for parking my bike on the pavement. Before I could contest the fine, she runs back to her golf cart and zooms off. I look at the fine, chuckle, scrunch it up and throw it in my pocket.

Did some research when I got home and found out that it's illegal to park a motor vehicle on the pavement IF IT IMPEDES THE FLOW OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC (which my bike was not - heck it's a tiny 150cc Honda, you could step over it if you tried hard enough). What livered me the most about this situation is that I've parked there for years with no issues and have photo evidence of others parking their bikes on the pavement behind mine so it's not like I'm the only one (the one photo even shows a Polo parked in a disabled parking with an able bodied driver standing next to it - no disabled passenger).

Anyone else had experience with fines like this? Definitely going to contest it but just wanted to know others thoughts.

Cheers

I had the same issue when I went down to see a client.

They want to run away fast, so you don't donder them. Some of them used to work on commision (no surre if that is still the case).

I took some pictures, wrote a long email to someone and they withdrew the fine.

This was a while ago. Phone the dept and ask about contesting the fine.

Sent off an email explaining the situation. Just going to have to wait and see.
Mom had a similar issue where she parked in a disabled parking bay with my disabled grandmother and a wheelchair in the car and they fined her R800 because there was no disabled sticker on the car.

I would just love to slap the crap out of those morons.

I've been asked maybe twice to move my bike off a pavement that I had it parked on but never have I been fined over it... thats weird.

Right? Yassis it makes my blood boil.
If I was in the wrong and they told me to move it then I'd happily oblige but R500 for parking a bike on the pavement seems very steep to me.
