Hey guys,

I have a dell 27” QHD gaming 165hz monitor which I recently paired with my macbook for work. It hurts my eyes terribly

Any advice for a replacement that will be especially good for work - lots of reading and texts involved - that can be good for gaming too? I like 144hz+ for racing simulation

Apple can only work with Apple.

A Macbook Pro you say

I recenly for the Dell P2723QE, don't game on it but I've found the text clarity on it amazing. 60Hz might be a deal breaker for you though.

LG 27GN950-B UltraGear 27" 4K UHD (3840x2160) 144Hz 1ms Nano-IPS FreeSync Premium Pro DisplayHDR 600 10-bit Gaming Desktop Monitor - Wootware has some pretty good reviews.

What's your budget?
What about the current monitor hurts your eyes?

Budget is up to 10k ish

I think the texts are blurry on the current monitor as well as the screen weirdly hurts my eyes when im right infront of it. For gaming it is perfect

I recently bought a Huawei Mateview GT 34" ultrawide that I use on my MacBook Pro. 3440x1440p, 165hz, brilliant colours, curved and ultrawiiiide. I'm a software developer so I spend all day reading and it is very comfortable to use. Very good option for around R8000.

I came from using a 24" Dell 1440p 165hz monitor and the new Huawei is much easier on the eyes.

If you want native scaling your options are limited, see Mac external displays for designers and developers, part 2 for more details.
Scaling a display with an "unsupported" PPI on MacOS will use some GPU. So if you're dependant on that you may see some issues. I use my Dell I linked earlier on my work Macbook Pro M1 Pro and M2 Macbook Air and don't see any issues. Just something to keep in mind.

Interesting. Browsed the article. That is exactly what is happening. It’s blurry my dell

Does anyone know of a software that allows for proper scaling?

MacOS can scale, but it's quite specific about PPI. I'm using "1440p" on my 4K Dell. It looks great, just uses some GPU.
You can try BetterDisplay, I don't see a difference though. YMMV.

by a 1440p 27" no scaling needed - 4k on a 27" does not make much sense, got to go like 34" and up for 4k

SwitchResX does a good job with unlocking HiDPi modes that may not be detected by default.

If you enable a HiDPi mode that’s 1440p, you should get your desktop being rendered at a size that looks like it’s 1440p due to the size of the UI elements, but it will still be 4K to give you crisp visuals without looking too small.

Is this the answer?

Is the VA panel not less than ideal? Compared to IPS?

Im conflicted 😐
Well, I have had IPS monitors in the past but I cannot really say that this VA panel is worse from what I can tell. Traditionally IPS is the holy grail (Other than OLED of course). There are probably a lot of technical tests that could make the difference quite distinct, but from my day-to-day use I am really happy with the colours on this monitor.

Honestly, for what it offers and the price you pay, I can't find anything else I would rather have over it. It gets quite bright, colours aren't washed out, and has good black/darker tone reproduction. Noticeable upgrade from my Dell 1440p 165hz monitor I had which was a TN panel. That Dell had really nasty rings that would show especially if there was a dark colour that had some sort of gradient to a lighter, monotone colour like grey or white.

I'd really like to properly colour calibrate it as I do automotive photography as a hobby, but find that the most reliable colour reproduction in editing comes from either my MacBooks built-in display or my iPhone in Lightroom, so I end up using that instead. I am yet to use a monitor that either comes with really good, accurate colour settings out of the box or one that has been calibrated using those physical calibration tools.

Very good points actually. My dell is the same one as what you had essentially

Any update here @RaeezN ? Did you pull the trigger on the Huawei? 😁 Curious to hear your thoughts...

Hey man, i did not. I ended up just scaling the image on my dell and made everything bigger. The next upgrade should be 4k in my opinion lol
