Hey everyone, my friend is losing his shit with his ISP. He's currently with Cool Ideas (Openserve) on a 300/150MB line but his speeds and stability is a joke. Does anyone know how to rule out if the router could be the issue? Also, does anyone know of a good ISP in Somerset West?

Openserve and cool ideas are amongst the best. Rather get in touch with the isp directly. Open a complaint thread on mybroadband.co.za, they have a Dedicated support forum. The right guys (senior support) will look into it.

He can use pingplotter to run continuous trace and see for dropped packets. And run a few speed tests from time to time and assess.

This is the perfect response. If you are still looking for other ISPs most of them are OK but usually Vox, Afrihost, and CoolIdeas stand out in terms of support. Also worth checking how hard each company is shafting you - Fibre Compare - Do note give them any of your details though they love to phone.

ime Cool Ideas support has rapidly declined over the last few years
snip rant
anyway I moved to Rocketnet and I'm much happier. But yeah, the CoolIdeas network is decent so it could be anything from a bad splice to a shitty router. Log a call, get them to check the light level to the ONT, you can connect your PC to the ONT directly and dial out from there and do the ping tests like suggested.

You can go with cape connect they are based in somerset which always help don't really have a problem with ping and speed.

With ruling out router plug a laptop/pc directly into ont box and setup your pc basically as a route and then run speed/ stability tests.

Having struggled with afrihost with their airmoblie sims where they straight up lied regarding port forwarding
And vox taking 2 weeks to let vodacom fibre know our line isn't working after promising they "on it"
I can only presume that your comment means they standout in bad support .

Work in the ISP industry.

The easiest way to rule out a router, especially on Openserve is to grab the PPPoE account from the ISP. Connect to the ONT directly to the PC or a laptop's LAN connection. On windows you can create a new connection, set the mode to PPPOE and enter in the ISP details there.

Now you will have a direct connection bypassing the router on that PC, capture logs of speedtest.net speedtest.co.za and any other services you can think of. Run Ping plotter to 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9 for about 5 minutes each and see if you can pickup any packet loss.

Throw that all in a neat ticket to your ISP and ask them to assist. In speed situations outside of the ISP, the Fibre Network Operator (FNO) often have a vast amount of tests needed before they will look into speed issues, especially Openserve.

thanks everyone, passing this info on :) hopefully he can game with normal ping soon

Have been on Vox / Openserve for ages and am happy with them. No issues
